IIRC there is a museum in Roswell dedicated to Dr. Robert Goddard, the pioneer of liquid fuel rocketry. He invented the technology that got us to the Moon.

I want to teach on a reservation also. I have checked out the BIA website. How did you get accepted and how is it going? I have 22 years experience, but have always wanted to teach on an Indian Reservation.

Congratulations on your new position!
As a soon-to-be noob to New Mexico from NY as well, I've enjoyed reading all your recommendations of what to go see!
Best of luck, I hope you love it!!

Default Must visit.....

You should visit Taos, New Mexico. Its unique with its arts and crafts and shops and also beautiful. Visited the Rio Grande Gorge and travelled around to the ski lodges site seeing. There are plenty of hotels to stay and some good food.

Addendum: As you said you are most likely to be teaching in the Gallup area I would suggest, in addition to a day in Albuquerque experiencing the Sandia Tram and the NM Museum of Anthropology at the University, using the State of New Mexico web site to find more information about the History of the Gallup area and the Navaho Nation. Then you could drive to Gallup via Socorro and New Mexico Tech's wonderful Geology Museum and then take Rt 60 west. It is an amazing drive.

I would be concerned about the social shock of transferring from NY (City or State?) to a place with less people than a NYC block over an area bigger than you can expect. Just for grins take a national road atlas and trace McKinley County, NM and overlay it, on the same scale, on a map of where ever you are in NY. Then check the populations. It may take a while to acclimate to not having that many people around. Among other things you cannot hide in the crowd because there ain't no crowd.

I did this for Socorro County and southern New Hampshire. The results were interesting. Socorro County is about as large as NH south of Concord and has a total population less than the uncrowded (sort of) town of Londonderry. Personally, I plan to move there after I retire in a couple of years. Then I plan on studying Environmental Science at NMT to catch up on 40 years of information since I was in college. Should be interesting.

NOW partly in preparation for the big move from NY, and partly because I just can't wait to start this new chapter in my life (I just graduated from college!), my dad and I were planning on visiting NM for a short stint, possibly in March or April.

We were thinking of flying in to Alb., checking out the city, taking a long drive up near Gallup (where I'll be teaching/living most likely), and basically just exploring as much of NM as possible. Which is obviously impossibly to do in a week's time. The thing is...if Im going in March or April...does anyone have suggestions for some MUST SEE/DO things? Personally, Im fine with meandering around any city and getting some decent New Mex food every day...but since Ill be moving out for a couple years and Dad has never been to NM...I want to have an idea of what we can do. He's really big into the Roswell/ Alien thing but....Im leaning more toward history and culture myself
Thanks!
Danielle
wow, there are so many things. Do take him to Roswell for a day, you can drive down, spend one night and head back to ABQ. The history and cultural things you can experience almost anywhere in NM. Gallop is not all that far from Albuquerque, about 2 hours at the most. Of course you will want to venture to Santa Fe plus if you have time visit one of the areas around the natural forests. Taos is great but if you only have a week, you can't do everything.

Hope this helps some and good luck with your future teaching in NM. It will be quite a challenge but should be a great opportunity and experience. Oh to be young again..

Default Don't miss this one!

Coltrane,

This is a pretty old thread so you must be well settled in by now-and hope things are going good for you. We're looking to make our move starting this year, but we'll see...

Anyway, for the first weekend in April, you have to check out 2 major items. The first is the Trinity site, which is only open twice a year. Not really much to see any more, but certainly an important piece of history and worth the time. The second big event, also on the 4th of April is the open house at the VLA. Now here, there is a ton to see and if you saw Contact, or have an interest in whatelse is out there (like I think most everyone in NM is, and some are even there areaready!) is the VLA. Check out their web site, NRAO Very Large Array, and we'll see you on the 4th!

(That is if it we ever get out of the deepfreeze here. Another 2" of crappy white stuff and -20F last night. Supposed to be -28 tonight, but then warming up to maybe 10 above over the weekend. We'll all be out in shorts and T shirts!)

Yeah NMNita, where do these old thing pop up from? And why do I suddenly get emails that have been in the system from 6 months earlier? And what the heck is Martinizing? We worry about these things up here, but again when it's -28 real temp and -45 wind chill and stuff starts falling off your body and your brain turns to mush what to expect?

I had a long philosophical talk with my wife last evening-she's concerned that all of the bits in the air from WiFi will make us all go sterile. Maybe she's right!

Is spring ever going to come?!

well it certainly doesn't look very springy here. I told hubby this morning, enough already..I couldn't wait for some real winter weather, we got it, high today maybe mid teens (I know not as cold as where you are, but colder than Albuquerque) now spring can come and not too soon...
