I didn't know!
hey friend,
I didn't know that the 'trader' was rnc headquarters of T or C, because we never go into the place. we've been there one time, and that was it. they do have some nice collectables there.
dukattman is a trip. we had a couple of t shirts made up there a couple of years ago: american flag with the lettering 'the right to be left alone'. we were trying to make a statement to the jerks that run the state park here, and it went over with a bang.
went down to hatch today, 4 wheelin', prospecting and rock collecting. a day so beautiful, it was almost a sin.
please look at photo of mountain with a hole in it, an abondoned mine.

We bought these figures from the "Trader", an antique/curio/bric-a-brac dealer about a block from the "over the top" Dukatt (who also lightened my wallet and bent my ear). The trader fella, don't know his name, has his digs/business for sale at around 260k I think. What a disturbing and angry fella that guy is! Poorly written neo-con literature strewn everywhere, Fox News blaring away, Hannity, O' Rielly, Ann C. propaganda nearly falling on the customer!!! The guy was so angry at the Obama phenom the rage fairly rolls off him...it's palpable! He didn't move his face four inches from the blathering talking head on Fox the entire time we were in his store.......that dude is dangerous . I hope he is on some sort of anger management therapy . I'm sure you know who I'm describing; I'll be giving him a wide birth in the future. In stark contrast, Celestial Creations was a joy! Beautiful fixtures, goods and attitude. Love that place . Second Hand Rose is fun too. The manager is a former Maui Hana hippie who has left the land of pakalolo and wind surfing for the dry desert and twisted sisters of TorC. Very funny. This attractive and pleasant middle aged lady regaled us with Maui and NM tales and how she once "received money" from Olinda, Makawao and Paia residents....gee, I wonder how and why she was receiving that money
SO MANY interesting and amusing personalities! TorC could be a gold mine for a young psych grad student looking into aberrant behavior patterns for a thesis!!!!!

Couple of thinga about all mines. You only dig where the ore is and the difference between a hole in the ground and a mine is the price of whatever you are digging out of the ground. I would like to prospect the tailings of some of these old mines.

There are some great restuarants here. La Cocina has the best prime rib. Yes, there is a meth problem here, but we are not unique to that. It is everywhere. It is sad to see good people go down because of such a bad drug.
Our community is more retired people living on fixed incomes, but they are good people. I know, because a 5 minute trip to the store does not happen, cause you always run into someone you know.
I believe we are a diverse community, from ranchers, to artists, to small business people. The Art walks are great to do, and then in the spring you have the farmer's market. The movie theatre is open again, and the lake and hot springs are great to enjoy. I few years back I caught a 30 pound stiper out of the river. So there are many things to do here, and if you need something different, you can go just about any direction and find something else to do. Camping, skiing, hiking, and history are all available to you in a very short distance.

Mining & Rock Collecting
Very, very good post, and I just love the ancient chinese proverb too!
When and if we come across mines, wheather being presently worked or abandoned, we do not touch, we only look and photgraph when accessable.
Most people we 4 wheel with agree to act the same, or we do not go.
our ideas of mining are using a metal detector, and bucket and shovel and gold pan in arroyos, washes and canyons, and if ground is dug for a find, the hole dug is back filled. rock hunting is the picking up of rocks visible above ground on the surface. artifacts, rocks, gold, silver found in national parks or forests are reported and not removed. we wished all people would do the same, so that future generations can view/enjoy what can be seen and found.
we, the people we hunt with are as least intrusive as possible. it's sort of a creedo we go by.
you have a rep coming my friend! thanks for a great post.

We also try to be as unobtrusive as possible. I am not about to enter an old mine until I have properly claimed it and have had it inspected by somebody that knows what they are doing. Do do otherwise is arranging for your own burial.

Thank you 6'3 for backing me up on this misconception about T or C. some think it's a rampant problem here, moreso than other cities, and this simply isn't the case. There are drug problems in all 50, thanks again.

Very nice shots friend Highdesert. Like your wheels too...the only way to travel the back-country is by 4x4.
Yeah, that Trader fella looks like he is about to melt down big time...hope there are no dangerous weapons in his proximity! Dukatt is a total riot, in stark contrast, and only about a block and a half from the simmering hot Trader. Can't imagine how these polar opposites avoid terminal collision?!
We had a brief but very saticfying sojourn to Southern NM. Buried my favorite cat on a mound that serves as his pyramid! Ate well and visited interesting shops. LC was fun as well and the road through Hatch was beautiful. My stress level over this crippled hand and my cat's demise was nearly erased...at least for a time! Looking ahead to a one way trip south...

i will admit im a little negative so far on my time in t or c. some of that i think has to do with being so far from my roots in the southeast, and, as i said, i found albuquerque superb. every reader should note for the record that i havent had a single bad encounter with any one in t or c. most everyone either keeps to themselves or are generally friendly. even so, theres next to nothing to do here and per capita, the ratio of stoned out of their minds people to every day normal people is a little off. im not giving up on t or c however. I plan on sticking it out for two years i think...but if the theater doesnt air the watchmen film in march im protesting.....with a sign...seriously.
