The cuchillo cafe was in operation till about last summer, and then closed. I did hear that the propreitor was having a difficult time finding people to work, which is sort of a problem here in T or C. and example of this is my wife works at the dollar store, and they recently hired an assistant manager, trained him and all, and now he's been calling into work, e.g. my kid is sick, I'll be late today, didn't get back from el paso last nite until very late...etc, etc... employee retention is a problem here.
yes, the flood rains all but wiped out the bar/restaurant in cuchillo, in fact, I guess the whole facade ended up blocking part of hiway 52. they had a photo of it in the herald or sentinal, and it looked bad. my buddy, bill the waterman live somewhere in that vicinity, and he was sort of concerned because the waters were really high on the cuchillo river, his place/domicile is only yards from the river, or, maybe they call it creek? not sure.
last year, the owner of big a burger was involved in a roll over accident that took his life.
we lost our domino's pizza, we only have a pizza hut now, so, to avoid paying about 24 bucks for pizza, we make our own.
walmart finally built a store here, not as nice as the one in las cruces though.
if you ever visit here, you'd see some changes, but alot is still the same.

well, i'd like to visit there again before too long, even if i can't look forward to going to the cuchillo cafe. sad that it folded, but i know what you mean about finding good help there. during the years my dad was in the vet's center, he remarked that it seemed like pretty much every person in T/C under the age of 35 had worked there at one time or another, but most only lasted a week or so.
one more place i'm curious about- there was a greenhouse called buffalo bill's exotic cactus ranch on the williamsburg end of town that i used to love to go to- are they still in business? i've still got a plant or two from there that i bought in the mid-90s.

Hey mutz, howzit?! We are back to contemplating small business venture(s) in TorC or Elephant Butte. Right now the Butte has the edge because of better traffic and a bit more attractive. What's the skinny on available retail space? We still are considering TorC but the Butte looks more promising, all things considered effendi. What are your views on the proposed and topical race track/infrastructure?

I don't know what elephant butte has to offer for "storefront" availability, we could scout a bit for you. would it still be gym/fitness related? or other?
we have not heard very much about the racetrack of late, they've pretty much put a lot of emphasis on the spaceport, and are supposed to be having a meeting about it in the near furture.
oh, the butte definitely has the traffic in spring-summer-fall, but I sort of think the thing that sort of hurts the butte is the lack of a "business district" or a "drag" like some small towns have (T ot C)
the founding fathers knew what they were doing when T or C was established, they routed business 25 right thru town, speed limit of 25 so when travelers pass thru, they get a good view of stores on the drag, which sometimes can equate to retail sales increases during tourist season. broadway & main st are excellent for keeping traffic slow enough, so passersbys can stop and shop if they wish. the butte doesn't have that. in fact, during some events staged at the state park, traffic can become quite heavy, and patience of park patrons cannot be met. the state recently ok'd funds to have a turn or idle lane constructed outside of the state park, so it can handle, or help during heavier than normal traffic jams. imagine that, traffic jams in the little village of elephant butte! If it would have been me, if I were director, I would have asked the state to allow us to construct another entry point, designed similarly to the present one, so we could check park patrons in much quicker, kind of like if there's more than three people in line, we'll open another register to speed your sale. but, this way, they'll only be making people wait just as long to get in as they always have. it's not going to speed up the check-in process, people will wait and wait as they always have.
You realize, there is only one coin operated self serve laundry in T or C. the one that was next to the IGA closed, this store front is presently "for lease". great location, plenty of parking, high traffic area. I think space available in the butte is limited to what you can find. moreso than T or C.

greetings h-d-m, dracul, et al!
I was excited to find this blog, as we are looking to retire to ToC in the next year or two. After the noise, traffic, crime, and all-around disagreeable climate of St Louis, we're ready for a quiet community like yours. We were out to N.M. about 2 years back, scouting for retirement, and ToC was not high on our list. But after spending a few nights there and learning how friendly the folks are, we fell in love with it.
hdm: we're both into rock hunting, not hard-core, but casual. Sounds like you'd recommend us getting a 4-wheeler before we come out. Our rental car on the last trip stopped short of some sites we wanted to get to. We'll take that into consideration.
You mentioned flooding on the Cuchillo. What about the Rio Grande?? With the dam at Elephant Butte that shouldn't be much of a problem. There's a couple properties for sale along Riverside that look interesting, but we were nearly killed in the Rapid City flood of '72, and the wife is spooky about settling too close to the water.
Pizza? Is the Happy Belly still open? They served up a good pizza when we visited.
We plan to be out there around the end of April. and we'd like a chance to meet and chat. More details later.

no, have not. but if it's like any other small business in
T or C, they most likely come and go, open and close whenever they please.
