Well.....is "Alamogordo" (fat cottonwood)...any better..?? LOL!!

Some of these names have interesting histories, and I intend to find some good books on Otero County history for my reading pleasure...!

I think that I might opt for "fat cottonwood" over "mouse". Fortunately, Raton is not named Rata (rat!) But then again, I'm just a "rata vieja" (old rat)! BTW, Tatiana has a song titled "Una Rata Vieja" (An Old Rat), I've claimed it as my signature song.

Cathy, go down to the museum on White Sands. They have some great books written by locals. I love the history on the town.

This summer we will look at the northern part of NM. Las Vegas and Raton among others.
Be sure to drive up from LV to Mora and then up to Angle Fire. You will not regret it!

Thanks, Jane! I also found a number of books at Amazon, too....and I also need to go get a library card and get that started.

I love to read local/county/area history.

LOL!! "Rata" seems to designate more a scumbag, thief, lowlife....etc. But I'm not sure about local usage here, LOL!!

I don't think I'd want to adopt that label....hehehehehe!

Although I lived in Taos, and Ranchos de Taos, I'd say my vote went to other: Abiquiu.

Something about the area around Abiquiu really appealed to me, but to visit, not to live. It is a beautiful, sober area, with lush mountains, but very few services (a good Country Inn, and a Petrol Market).

But it is a vastly more interesting place when the wine is in, and the lavender is blooming.
