Let's not forget corruption in government: we're also one of three states whose state government has failed to approve reasonable open conference legislation - too much transparency?

I'm still waiting to see what we will be when (if) we grow up.
Time stands still!!! I've been here for 4 months in Clovis/Portales.
A few observations:

People here are few notches dimmer, we all have our moments, but there is a din of consistency here.

The lack of worldliness leads to a myopic (nearsighted) view and an inability to change.

Progressive thinking is flowing like an arroyo (intermittent, dry riverbed), a far change from Ohio where I was from, and its a red state!!!

Nothing but American Taliban fire-and-brimstone religion, Limbaugh, Hannity beating it down.

check out www.billpressshow.com if you need a progressive fix. He's not on around here, the powers that be keep it too socially retarded.

Unless you are near a college campus, your hopes are dim. At least people filter in from elsewhere in the country, and bring with them some hope of diversity.

What an unfortunate slam to conservatives, of which I am one.

Default I'm not imagining these bad things

The education system here leaves a lot to be desired.
Hence the second rate labor pool. I've been TOLD that and SEE how people work.
Cashiers counting your change twice, sometimes three times before handing it to you.

The dimness is a malaise, people here are not stupid, they just don't have more proper instruction.

The Hispanics seem to be the hard workers and are very inventive. I like the culture.

Nice people though, way friendlier than Ohio. Nice will get you only so far.

People arrive here at Cannon AFB, and are ready to leave soon after.
Most aren't from here, size it up and are depressed. City officials better cater to the influx, or there is going to be problems.

Unless you buy satellite radio, there is not much to listen to unless a brainwashing of heavy rotation of pop, or religion. The Spanish stations are OK for a while.

Funny how where the conservatism lies amongst drab surroundings here, and the cows n' flies. You go to Santa Fe or ABQ, It's way different progressively. If people don't get there to stay, they move on. The state is not really that much to talk about except the mountains or the outdoors in general.

I thought a staple of the "progressive" movement or liberalism was being big on "tolerance." I hear the word "tolerance" repeated over and over and over again. I guess tolerance only applies though to those who favor liberalism to people of a similar mind-set.

To me, New Mexico is a dump. I would never live there. It's hot, there are low class people all over the place with dumpy yards full of trash and wrecked vehicles. The roads are trashed - pot holes all over the interstates.

Ok... Sorry but that's how I felt about New Mexico - been through there about 10 times or so.

Sounds like home, Torry. Can't wait to move away from the terminally pretentious yuppies that have infested New Hampshire.

BTY - We invented the "Yankee back yard". It is where we store useful things that we cannot afford to repurchase. Or refuse to even if we could afford to. We have practiced recycling for a very long time.

tcburns is on a distinguished road
In Chicago less than 50%, that's less than 50% no typo, graduate from HS. I can't recall buying something from any store that didn't have a cash register that counted change for the person. I taught a creative writing class here when we first came to the area, and was appalled that few university juniors could organize their thoughts or function with basic writing skills.

If people think New Mexico is unique in it's problems then they may live an insular life in some uppermiddle class culturally-gated community as they are certainly out-of-touch with this country. America isn't well educated, has a lot of poor people who are barely making it [40 million can't afford any health insurance] New Mexico has a lot of very fine places to live, it's a different culture in a different environment, with good and bad points. New Mexico's problems are the nation's problems, they're just not very well hidden.

I lived in Clovis for 22 months and hated it, for many reasons, not the least because i was stationed there, and the GI's were not welcome; further it is part of west texas in culture, and economy and has less to do with New Mexico than the panhandle. In other words it's not representative of the state.

We're moving this year to Socorro or thereabouts because of the heat, the people and the opportunities that we see there. I have no doubt their education system has problems - every state does - but after extensive travelling there 2 years ago we found a level of interest and friendliness that vastly exceeded what we expected.

We feel we can make a difference there, the positives overcome the negatives.
