For the most part I like New Mexico, but the citys have way too crime for me and they are VERY liberal. Its ok though becasue the countryside is genreally conservative.

The natural beuty is great though.

Most of the likes I have read in this thread have to do with natural beauty and I most agree, it's different from other states. When it comes to community infrastructure, education and crime is where I see the most of the criticism. I just came back from a long visit to almost every region of New Mexico and I agree with many things said in this forum. There is a high crime index almost everywhere, there is corruption at city government level in many towns and public services leave a lot to be desired. For example, it took 2 weeks from mail I sent in Santa Fe for arriving in Dallas, TX. My travel companion had all her cash stolen from the hotel room in Santa Fe; the police refused to come to investigate saying that they only had 30 officers for 3 shifts in the whole city and they were busy handling more serious crimes. The Narcotics Division was not operating because its Chief was under Federal investigation for taking bribes. The Mayor was also under Federal investigation for money laundering, all this was on the first page of the local newspaper and apparently nobody in the city seemed to care. What would be happening in cities less important than Santa Fe? In ABQ the Holiday-Inn by the airport, would close the doors at PM prevent intruders. Traffic laws are a joke in the highways. nobody respects them. Outside good hamburgers and steaks, most of the food is the "bland" variety of Mexican food. Most everywhere, there were noisy demonstrations led by aging hippies and drug addicts against President Bush and the war in Iraq. Of course, the sunsets and the mountains were spectacular. People and nature seem to follow different paths.

Default not so much in Alamogordo,

The town is conservative for the most part, I think. No demonstrations there,
the town is pretty supportive of the military, since alot of the people are
military or retired. As far as crime, I lived there five yrs and didnt have any
problems. Not saying there isnt crime, but not as much as ABQ or Santa Fe.

What do you mean hot? Maybe in Las Cruces and the like but New Mexico has a very strange climate. Theres desserts, grasslands, and even taiga here. It SNOWED today here in Gallup. I have seen it as low as -30 just in Gallup.

I'd be shocked to ever see that in Alamogordo or Eastern NM as these areas are very conservative. I believe Otero Co. had the highest percentage of votes in NM counties for republican John Dendah in the last governors race and also the highest for George Bush in the last Presidential race. We pride ourselves as not being liberal/hollywood like Santa Fe and Northern NM......

We are very pro military and pro police in Otero Co.........

Catron county is great for conservatives. Very beutifal, conservative and sparesley populated. The Indian towns like Taos and Gallup are the most liberal. The mountians(Red River) and plains(Clovis) tend to be pretty conservative as well.

As you guys brought up the liberal/conservative bit I'd like to comment:

Don't believe what politicians say, believe what they do. The Bushistas running Washington say they are consevertive but act like totalitarians with unecessary wars, obcene "Patriot Acts", unlimited defecite spending, lying to Congress and everybody else, etc.

I simply believe in open honest government where the Congress makes the laws, the executive enforces them and the Judicial makes certain that the laws are Constitutional and that innocent people are not persecuted for political gain. I also belive that the government has to be separate from the church because collusion between them leads to tryanny.

If that makes me a liberal - so be it.

When the Country is at war the Executive branch has to take leadership. I would like to hear from those who oppose President Bush, what action the Country should take to fight terrorism. Offering criticism without giving alternative solutions is easy.
