Popping in late, but wanted to say Hi

Timberon Newbie here - We just moved to Timberon from SoCal this past July and the cool mountain air, blue skies and pondersosa pines were SUCH a relief from brown & dusty ol Riverside County! I just love it. As for critters, my kids saw a small mountain lion (or possibly a bobcat) once. The deer wander freely through the yards, as do the wild turkeys. I see beautiful big elk on the outskirts when I drive out of town. No bears yet.

We have not had much snow yet, but the locals say we usually get little snows (4") spaced out through the winter and usually one big snow per year. There were daily thunderstorms during July and August and big lightning storms at night. We had all the dogs in too my lab does NOT like thunder. But the T-storms have ended and I haven't heard one since September.

Another option you might consider is a rental home for a week or so, just to check out the area. They have some really nice ones and not very expensive. Dogs are usually OK. Contact Shantel at Timberon Rentals.

Hi, Had to get two cents worth in. We live 60 miles south of Dallas. The inlaws live in Timberon, and have been going there every summer for years, and winters when we can. We finally purchased a place this summer for our eventual retirement. You will not fine a better place in the summers, the few days it does get hot only last a few hours then cools right down. The winters are not that bad compared to the mountains farther north. NO wind chill like around here !! And Four Seasons not just two. If you have google earth you will see there are not that many houses around. There are also lots five acres and more. But the beauty of the mountains, trees, deer, birds, and other wild life is what we fell in love with. We did buy a mobile home, with out the wind thought like here, you can't tell.
Good luck !!! David

I feel the same about my canines. They let me live in my home too.

I'd love to continue hearing from you regarding the area. I want to go in March and hope to do so. Have you ever been to or are you possibly considering Cloudcroft as well?
No, I just meant that you prefer dogs and I prefer cats, not that I didn't like cats. I can't imagine why I would have 'catman' for a moniker otherwise! Anyway, it's all good.

Oh yes, I've been to Cloudcroft several times. I doubt that I would move there because it's so touristy and not warm enough. I've never been to Timberon, but it's a bit less cold (and a lot less snowy) and also isn't as tourist-oriented (I hope). I will probably wind up in Alamogordo or one of the towns north of it like Carrizozo or Socorro. After all, Alamo is only about 22 miles from Cloudcroft, so it would be easy to visit if the former got a little too toasty.

Yes, catman threw me thinking you didn't like the felines unless you worked at a zoo with the lions. Sorry I misinterpreted your post. I love all little animals and have mostly had cats all my life but have switched to only dogs now.

Yes, too much snow in Cloudcroft and too many tourists. I don't want that nor do I want to live where it's hot again even if NM doesn't have the humidity Texas has. That's why Timberon sounds and looks (from the internet) good to me. I can't wait to visit.

Another thing I don't want is being around the hustle and bustle of many people. The smaller the population, the better.

Time will tell. I've about exhausted my choices of places to live. If NM isn't for me, I may have to give up.

Thanks for the great information. My Lab is not bothered by thunderstorms but her daughter, my Lab/Catahoula is petrified of them just like her human mom. I can't imagine they are anything like what we get in Central Texas. Living with them is so unpleasant to go along with the horrendous heat and humidity. Of course, there is always the potential of a tornado.

I've checked the site already on Timberon Rentals. I'm hoping to go on Spring Break but one of my friends has had to bow out. I'm going to ask my sister or one of my children if he or she will go with me.

I'm originally from So. Cal. but moved to Texas nearly 30 years ago. I missed CA a bunch, and sometimes I actually still do even though it's not like it was when I lived there.

Are your children school age? If so, I'm assuming they attend school in Cloudcroft.

I must hurry now so I'm not late for work. See you and the other Timberon lovers on the forum.

Canine*Castle: I agree with most of what you said, although I much prefer cats. I've been in love with NM ever since 1961, when I first visited it. I will be quite happy to move there. The low humidity is something to be treasured, even if it gets hot on occasion!

I've read on the forum that it takes 1½ hours to get to Alamogordo from Timberon, and perhaps half that to get to Cloudcroft. That's a long way to go for any shopping, although Timberon may have some by now for all I know. It isn't necessarily a deal breaker, but it's something to keep in mind. Other than that, I agree with "the smaller the better". I'm not a shopaholic, but being able to get a carton of soft drinks without a long drive seems convenient.

The distance doesn't bother me, but for a gallon of milk only, it might. I can shop a few times a month, get all I need, and be all set. It would be a nice little outing from Timberon to Alamogordo.

One of the posters mentioned there is a small grocery store in Timberon and that's good to know if one runs out of something.

Right now, this place is sounding like a Paradise to me.

Wow, you've loved NM for a very long time. When do you plan on moving if all goes well? I've only been through the Las Cruces, Lordsburg area many years ago driving from CA to TX. I've been to Red River and it is quite lovely too, but way too much snow for me and definitely way out of my price range along with too many people up there.

You can get stuff like sodas and milk and basics at the Timberon store. If she doesn't have something you want, let her know and she'll start carrying it. She gets her stuff from Walmart.
Then take a trip to Alamogordo 1 1/2 or Ruidoso (a little further) at 2 hours and get your groceries weekly, biweekly or monthly.
Cloudcroft has a little store also and a great bakery.

C*C: I need to be around the DFW area so I can help out my 87-year-old mother. I can't see moving out of state until she is no longer extant and the estate is dealt with. After that, I can move. No telling when that will be. Until then, I'll just visit NM as often as I can.

songinthewind7: That's good to know. At least a few basics are available in Timberon.
