I wondered whether there is a back way to EP from Timberon that is passable on a street motorcycle. I'm sure it would be easier on a dual-sport bike.
I have heard the back way from EP is passable but if your in a car it is a slow go. We usualy come in from the Artisia side. There is a back way from there thru Pinion that is suppose to be passable. It use to be a good dirt road before they paved the road from CC. It has been years since we used it though, The trip into CC and on to Timberon is lot more scenic, so we go that way. We go straight across I-20 to Sweetwater then to Snyder, over to Seminole thru Hobbs to Artisia to CC. We are 50 miles South of Dallas. Untiiiiiillllllllllll.....

The last time my DH and his DB used the back road - about 5 years ago it was flat tire time.. I would make sure you have a good patch kit.

Thanks for the warning!

Songinthewind7: I missed hitting a deer on my motorcycle here in Texas by about a foot two years ago. I was cruising along on a back road at about 60 mph at dusk out in the boonies, and there was a deer just standing in the middle of the road. I almost didn't see it in time. We were having a terrible drought and the creeks were all bone dry; I suppose it was looking for water. I almost needed a change of clothes after that and slowed down to about 40 for the next 20 miles.

Charlie goes to work before daylight and gets home at nightfall in the winter so he's driving in the dark a lot.
Glad your deer scare turned out in your favor.
They are pretty to watch though.

It would probably be too cold for him to be comfortable on a motorcycle around Timberon to ride after dark (or before light). I agree, deer are pretty to watch, as long as they aren't too close. I can hardly wait to ride my bike up to Timberon, though! It's been as close as Sunspot.

It takes about 12 1/2 hours depending on how many times we have to stop . We drive the speed limit and don't rush though.

Thanks, David. I figured it would take about that long. I do the speed limit too and have to stop frequently.

songinthewind......I'm just curious what route you guys take to Timberon after you're on I20 for a while. On mapquest, it has one going all the way to El Paso. That's weird to me, but may be feasible. Anyway, I'd love to hear about your "map." Actually, anyone who travels from Texas, please respond if you have minute.
Many thanks.

From Fredericksburg, we seldom take the freeway but sometimes we do. We've only been through El Paso once and that was once too much for me.
We usually go up through Carlsbad and Artesia and go into Timberon that way. We sometimes go through Ruidoso to get a few groceries but it seems easier now to pack the groceries from here and go straight to Timberon. It's a little faster to cut to Artesia but we've gone a few different ways just to see something different.
We are not freeway people and if a back road can be taken, we take it.
