I have been searching until I'm blue in the face for a new place to call home. I have lived with the brutal summers of Texas for nearly 30 years now and am sick and tired of the length of time the heat and humidity is present. I can also do with less severe thunderstorms and the always present danger of tornadoes especially in the spring but can happen any time.
A friend told me about Cloudcroft and while researching more, I found some sites regarding Timberon which looks really nice. Even the real estate seems decent. From what I read, Cloudcroft has much more snow than Timberon and not much snow is what I'm wanting. I checked on Roberts Realty and most of the homes are listed as golf course units or Timberon units and am not quite sure what that means except I know there is a gold course there. Some of them are manufactured homes, something I really don't want, but might be willing to accept for the great weather. I saw one that I don't believe was a manufactured home and it was in the $80,000. I'm hoping for an area that isn't going to explode in population within the next 20 years. Hopefully, I'll be around at least that much longer. ![]() I'm looking for a beautiful area with trees and mountains, mild summers, mild winters, and a place where I won't be boxed in with neighbors and therefore, I would like an acre or two. I must have peace, quiet, beauty, and preferably long-range views. I don't want to be near any noisy roads either. If I, in my old age, am going to move, I am going to be fussy. ![]() If I make a move some place before I retire, I would like to work in a school district as an teacher's aide or in the office because I love being off when the students are off. Of course, I'd consider a regular all year job as well since I only have less than 7 years to retirement. Here is a curious question... Have any of you ever seen a bear near your home? That's kind of freaky to me, but I guess I could learn to shoot a gun it that's what one should do. ![]() I don't care about the distance to shopping areas as I absolutely detest shopping anyway and only go if I absolutely have to. Therefore, I frequent the grocery store more than anything. Anyway, are there any other small areas that resemble Timberon that I may check out? I'm hoping to take a drive to this lovely area in March during spring break. It truly does look appealing to me. I love the Blue Ridge Mountains in Virginia but have decided totally against that area as it is just becoming way too populated. I've even considered a more remote area of Texas, but that isn't going to let me escape the heat. This whole state is way too hot. This search is about to drive me nuts!! ![]() |

Canine*Castle: You and I sound a lot alike, excepting the canine/feline thing. I too live in Texas and would like to move to NM. Timberon looks good to me too, with a couple of caveats. There may not be any shopping worth mentioning in Timberon itself, and Cloudcroft is some distance away and probably doesn't have very much, other than touristy stuff. Alamogordo is probably the closest place that would have much in the way of shopping. The other caveat is that it seems that Timberon is mostly sliced up into fairly small lots of half an acre or so, although you can probably get two or three adjacent lots. I wouldn't be surprised if it didn't evetually become a little crowded, but it may take a long time. Other than that, I love it. It's beautiful and the climate is very nice.

You have 3 of us here that have property in Timberon, egglady, songinthe wind7 and myself. Don't worry about the close neighbors, most of them are not there most of the year anyway. We have many close ones near us and unless we really want to see them, you don't. And the area will not explode with people. Most want a walmart right down the road. And its 1 1/2 hrs away. Timberon is about 1,000' lower than Cloudcroft, so we don't get as much snow, but its not that bad when it does snow. The kids go to school in Cloudcroft, 45 minutes away. So for that for a job could be questionable. We love the peace and quiet up there, bear? I have not seen any, but there are other things up there, just be aware. But where else can you have the deer going through your yard. If you call Roberts and talk to them ask for Michelle, I know that not much has sold for a while, so you could get a better deal. If you have more questions just ask away. Jane |

Oh, I'm great with questions. I may quetion you to death.
![]() I remember songinthewind living in Fredericksburg and posting her home on the classifieds in city data. I was at one time interested in maybe checking it out, but then again, staying in Texas won't alleviate the heat problem. What kind of animals are there that one might have to watch out for? I have two dogs, large ones, and I don't want anything to happen to them. That's another reason why I want to be a good ways away from neighbors. They like to bark, and I know that bothers some people. Of course, that could even ruin the peace and quiet although I do keep them in the house a lot. In the summer, they're hardly ever outside because of the intensive heat. It would kill my older one, I know. In NM though, maybe they could be out more. Trust me, I'm very considerate of others, but sometimes when a dog barks, she barks. I keep them in at night though no matter what because I like them in the house with me.For the people don't live there all year, when do they usually visit? From what I saw on Roberts Realty and from what catman said that the area is pretty boxed in with homes. Is there some place where one can buy an acre or two with a modest home away from what's already developed? I'm as quiet as a mouse, but I would fear my dogs not being so. Hey catman, you may not be into the canines and I'm not into bass. I don't have felines anymore, just dogs. Hey, with your name, how come you don't have cats? ![]() Is the crime minimal? Is there a grocery store or drug store in Timberon? Is Cloudcroft nice? I would consider it too if it doesn't snow dramatically. Catman, I really don't mind about the shopping. I would make it a one a month trip to Wal-Mart and be pleased about that because as I mentioned, I hate shopping. Where are you from, chilegal, and egglady? I told you I'd be full of questions, and I'm sure I'm not finished yet. ![]() |

There are Mt lions and deer, and maybe a few other things, but nothing to worry about. If your dogs bark I am sure the animals will stay away.
People usually visit in the summer when they can get away from the heat in the lower lands. Crime is not a problem, but there is not a drug store or a large grocery store in Timberon. Egglady lives in Timberon, and I have a place there and in Alamogordo. The best thing for you to do is visit Timberon on spring break. And ask away on the questions. Jane |

Canine*Castle: What gave you the idea that I don't have cats? I've got two indoor cats and one outdoor one who is a neighborhood cat. Or should I say, they have me. I'm glad they let me live here.
I don't dislike most dogs, but I do prefer cats.I'm planning to make it out to Timberon, Alalmogordo, Socorro, etc. sometime this year. I need to check it all out with moving there in mind. |

I feel the same about my canines. They let me live in my home too. I'd love to continue hearing from you regarding the area. I want to go in March and hope to do so. Have you ever been to or are you possibly considering Cloudcroft as well? |

Hello Canine Castle,
What part of Texas do you live in? I want to be away from the heat and humidity also. Timberon houses do not have a/c. You don't need them. Open the windows and get a great breeze. It's fantastic. Go to Timberon, New Mexico - Information and Visitor Center and you'll be able to find some info on houses, etc. A lot of the mobile homes are like houses because they're on permanent fixtures. We're on a golf course lot in a mobile home. Not sure why they call it a golf course lot. Ask Michelle at Roberts Realty. Very helpful lady. I haven't seen any bears but I've heard that one side of Timberon feeds them so they hang around that area. Tons of deer and elk. They come into the yard. Our dog chases them out but we were told by some neighbors that they'll get bored with that after awhile. We're selling our place in Texas and then we'll be in NM permanately. We were planning on coming back up in March or at least by April for a week or so. There is a small grocer in Timberon and a gas station. Most people make a day out of it and go to Alamogordo once a week or two and do shopping. Cloudcroft is nice and I enjoy it but I don't mind tourists either. You'd have to drive to Cloudcroft if you were to get a job teaching sometimes. If you're there in March and we are too, we should meet up. Hope this helps some. |

I live in Hill County about 65 miles south of Fort Worth. The heat and humidity is just so brutal, and I'm tired of it. I would totally love not having to need an A/C; how delightful. I would do the Alamogordo thing a few times a month or so, but it's nice to know there is a small grocery store in Timberon and a gas station if need be. I've been looking at the Roberts Realty site and some of those homes really look nice. I'm particularly interested in one that was marked down from $98 to $88. It looks so nice. There are a few others that are great too, but I'll just have to get there in March and check it all out. I've been checking all sorts of websites about Timberon and it really looks like a wonderful place to settle down. I really would love to move sooner than when I retire, but I must find work. I'm not a teacher, but would love to be a teacher's aide or work in the office at a nearby school which from what I gather is Cloudcroft. One of the sites I've been glued to is the one you mentioned in your post. The photos look marvelous and such a change from Texas. So Cloudcroft really gets the tourists and Timberon doesn't, correct? I can imagine you're used to tourists coming from Fredericksburg. It's hard to leave an area and I just absolutely love my home, but the heat is so dreaded. I also dread the terrible storms and potential tornadoes even though I do have a storm cellar. My children are grown and settled in the metroplex and that is one reason why I'm so hesitant in moving away. Timberon though isn't really all the far from the Fort Worth (son) or Arlington (daughter) area. From what I can tell, maybe 600 miles or a tad less. I'll keep you posted as to my plans and maybe if mine and yours coincide, we can meet. Thanks so much!! |

Timberon gets some tourists. People come up to play golf but I've seen very few. Not touristy like Cloudcroft and definately not like Fredericksburg.
Seems most of the people that live there like privacy and keep to themselves but will do anything for you if you need help in any way. |
