Yes, I agree. I don't think people realize how much higher parts of West Texas are:

Lubbock: 3200
Midland: 2800
San Angelo: 1945
Van Horn: 4061
Horizon City: 4012

And as for Alpine/Ft Davis/Marfa....you're absolutely right. Not only medical care, but shopping and other amenities in general Most people in that area drive to Midland-Odessa (175 miles min) for medical and major shopping.

What *is* an "altitude band?"

and Cathy4017 (WestTexan) mentioned:

Son of a gun! I always assumed all those little towns were all under 3,000 ft. Looking further, even Van Horn is over that. ... Ya never know ...

I've driven I-10 from Las Cruces to Houston a few times. I just assumed it was downhill from El Paso - judging from the vegetation. What a great drive!
It is!! I love it, too!!

The same question crossed my mind. My thought was that for an extra 500 ft, Albuquerque comes into the picture. If the desert heat of Phoenix can be an issue, 500 ft. seems like a decent trade-off for much cooler Albuq.
