Native Texan but convince me of a possible move to NM!!! (Albuquerque: rent, house) - City-Data Forum

I am currently residing in Ohio and desperately want out, so my 2 final choices are Austin, TX and Abq, NM... My head tells me to make the move back to TX and family but have lived in NM for 5 years about 10 years ago... I am married and have a 3 1/2 y/o son and really want to come back to the land of enchantment but am really torn... We will probably rent for a bit and choose the area we want to live in, but we really need to make a decision since our house may be sold very soon... I love the outdoors and all that it offers but really want some peeps to chime in with their reasons why this state is so great...

I can't speak from experience, but if your heart is calling for NM then you may want to follow. Some of the members here have said they moved to be closer to family and regret that decision (as far as the move goes). NM is special and if you can truly, truly handle being just one state to the west, I think you'd really like being back in ABQ. Like Austin we are growing, just at a more stable pace. Having said that, I absolutely love Austin and if you choose TX, vacationing in NM will be easier from there than Ohio.

I moved from central Texas to Albuquerque in 2000 and never missed Texas. The weather is better and the area is so much more artistic and eclectic. I'm sure people who live in Austin would say otherwise but I've just never gotten much out of that place and would not want to live there. I'm heavily biased in favor of Albuquerque. Have you visited lately? The area is really booming.

Haven't been to Austin, so I can't compare it, but I do find that ABQ has all the perks I enjoyed while living in Dallas & Houston, and almost none of the hassles of those two cities.

And we have pretty clean air too

You don't want to move to Albuquerque. Austin is your home. You have no business here. Move along.

I'm wanting out of Texas because of the brutal heat and humidity in the summers, so I'd say go for the Albuquerque area if weather is a factor. You'll have less chance of tornadoes too. And the mountains and forests; you can't beat that beauty near Austin.

You may have family in Austin, but that doesn't mean it will feel like home. Follow your heart, have your dream, and wherever you may settle, I wish you the best.

Well, the choice has been decided upon and me and my family will be headed back to NM!!! Really love it in NM and can't wait to finally get back.. I am just sick and tired of this cold, cloudy, crappy weather here in Ohio and can't wait to get back to a more mild climate...

Seems no matter how hard we try, our Jedi mind tricks are not able to convince people to stay away. The "force" of NM is strong. Oh well, welcome back.
