Thank you. It also came across my mind that the severe cold weather might play a part in keeping crime down. I think I will take the milder weather here and put up with more crime than all that cold there.

Abq is bad b/c of the gangs & drunk drivers. All these stats on crime in ABQ you see are pretty accurate. I have 2 friends who are cops & they tell me a lot of stuff you never hear on the news (ie., the northeast heights have a lot of meth labs). My husband's car got broken into 2x in 2months (both in diff areas). Both were in the "good" part of town. We're in a brand new neighborhood in a good area & one of our neighbors shot/killed a guy he caught trying to break in his truck. My friend witnessed a carjacking in the John Brooks parking lot. And 2 days ago, there was a shooting across from where my husband works at a Walgreens. Down by the Bosque bike trails, there's piles of glass on the ground, in the parkinglots, from breakins. If you live here & havent seen how bad the crime is, you're lucky & its only a matter of time. I lived in a city 10 min north of Boston & I never locked my car. It was safe. Some people say there's crime everywhere. That's true, but some areas are worse than others. There are actually good, safe towns to live in. We're actually moving in a few months to one.

You are so right in your assessment.... for those who say they feel 'perfectly safe' in Alb, I caution you..... be aware, be safe. You are not living in some la-la land where everyone is safe and friendly. I realize to non-natives, especially those from back east, Alb may seem like a safe town ( ), believe me, it is not.
There really is no safe place in Alb anymore, unless you are out of it! All the gangs and drugs have moved across the city, even to the " NE Heights" that people seem to revere around here.
Try this on for size....drive by shootings in the NE Heights, people being shot and killed in neighborhoods off of Montgomery/Eubank,etc; the Hollywood video slayings (anybody remember that?), the East Mountain slayings of those poor teenagers....still unsolved, daily shootings/stabbings and carjackings, drunk driving to rival no other.....whole families run down while out on evening walks......not to mention the highways and the unsuspecting motorists who have lost their lives to BIA officials out drunk out of their minds killing people.....domestic violence a close second. Drugs and gangs and all their related crimes rule/run Alb....I appreciate that some may 'love' Alb, and it may offer them something another community cannot, but for crying out loud, be safe, be safe!

It makes me sad that ABQ has become a city with so much crime. I grew up here & it didnt used to be like this. I could walk home from school with no problems. ABQ does have it's good points. The weather is very mild. No major disasters to speak of (well, besides lack of water & fires). If you like the SW culture, you would love it here. Old town has a lot going. Mayor Marty Chavez is doing a good job to get this city up & running as it's growing increases. The skys are beautiful. When we lived in Boston, I never saw a sunset like I have here in ABQ. If it werent for the crime increase, I wouldnt have a problem raising my family here.

Wow do people's experiences vary widely. I've been here two years and while I see the crime reports on the news, generally I haven't witnessed anything terrible or been involved in it. I've lived in big cities like Houston and DC with high crime rates and you just learn to always be aware of your surroundings and make good decisions about your safety. I can honestly say I have felt relatively safe and I've been in all parts of the city at various times of the day and night etc.

Hello!
I am so sorry for your situation. I am trying to warn Californians about some of these things - wherever they are considering going to. The locals in Las Cruces who have spoken to me about crime in ALBQ and the rest of the Northern part of NM have described things a whole lot less diplomatically than I have. All I can say is save up about $6k because that is what it will cost (if you do it yourself) to move out of state. Some things just don't work out. Again, sorry.
{{{hugs}}} Cali-girl

im sure its based on per capita also......being that we have only like 1.5 or 1.7 million in the state.....those stats shoot up quickly vs say NY....where even nyc has nearly 10 million....or however close to it.
ive lived here 13 years. never had a single problem to speak of.
