Hi I am going on a trip in August and a trip at Christmas to ABQ, Santa Fe and then Taos. We will have one dog the first time and two the next. I was wondering how dog friendly is the area. Walking around downtown or outdoor cafes? I know it sounds crazy but where my daughter lives they have restaurants for people with dogs. Also when do you need chains there? I thank you in advance for any info!
The dog-trendiest area in town is Nob Hill. Downtown is not as dog-appropriate.
If your dog is adequately socialized (sniff, lick, thank you, moving on) then you'll have a much better time.
August will be a much better occasion for outdoor dining with your canine companion. Christmastime may be sunny and dry but still nobody wants to sit outside then, dog or not. You may have a much smaller set of options then, but at least you can scope it out on the first visit.
There are a number of nice dog parks in all the NM towns you mention, and almost every restaurant with a patio will allow leashed, well-behaved dogs (on the patio only) when the weather is nice. In winter, you'll probably have some trouble finding restaurants that can accommodate your dogs. Some brew pubs allow dogs inside. A great indoor and outdoor option in Albuquerque is Green Jeans Farmery. It's a complex of food and drink places made out of shipping containers. Green Jeans has a bar and taproom that let dogs inside (again, only very well-behaved, leashed dogs). They can do this because (technically) they don't serve food in those spaces, but you can order from any of the food places in the same complex and they will bring your food into the bars.
There are some great trails along the ditches and the bosque that are wonderful for dogs, plus lots of great hiking year-round. Make sure you always take water along for your dogs, though. They get extremely dehydrated here, even in winter.
