I never spent much time there, but since it's on the interstate I passed through it many times. It seemed ... okay. Not my kind of place, but to each his own.

It's definitely HOT. And I mean HOT-HOT-HOT. Snow isn't unheard of in the winter, but it is definitely rare.

The landscape looks NOTHING like the scene in Rain Man. Tom Cruise may have thought he was in Tucumcari in that scene, but it was most definitely not shot anywhere near Tucumcari.

There are definitely coyotes, but I don't know that they are a rampant problem. They're certainly no danger to humans, but you'd probably want to keep smaller livestock in a pen if you're out of town. Personally, I'd be much more worried about rattlesnakes than coyotes. Rattlers can definitely be a problem in the country.

As far as recreation, there are lakes nearby --- Conchas and Ute are local favorites. But they're nothing like Illinois lakes. Definitely more dirt and rocks than trees. Worst sunburn I've ever had in my life I got at Ute Lake. I burned so bad that my face bled and scabbed. Not fun.

Santa Fe is about 3 1/2 hours away. It's a very expensive town, but very neat. Lots of history and culture and great food. Very active arts community.

Avoid Las Vegas, though. It's a pit.

According to http://www.city-data.com/city/Tucumcari-New-Mexico.html Tucumcari does a crime rate higher than the national average, though most of the crime seems to be larcenies and burglaries.

Default About Tucumcari

I have friends who moved there and love it but I am like the others, there isn't a lot of stuff to do there and yes you do have to worry about rattlesnakes and not much water. The cliffs around there are pretty to look at though and I have noticed too that people have moved out more then moved in and maybe someone who has done that can write in and answer that question because I 'd like to know myself why people are moving from there in a good number.

Default TUCUMCARIAN in the forum!!

Hi,

I've lived in Tucumcari for 30 years.

Rattlesnakes, yes they are here, have I ever run across one. Yes, I have seen them shimmy across the roads while driving to other towns. Have I ever seen one inside Tucumcari city limits. No.

I did live in the country from the age of 7 - 16 and never saw one. But I do have friends who live further out on ranches who kill rattlesnakes.

HOT? Yes we get hot, but its a dry heat which is different than areas w/ humidity. Usually the 100's for 2 - 3 days and then drops back down to the mid 90's. What does happen is that the evenings cool off. So you get relief from the heat. We are not as hot as Phoenix or Las Vegas.

We are shrinking in population.

Rent is inexpensive and you can property and homes at very very reasonable prices. Lots of land and I'm sure plenty for sale w/ homes. You can get very nice homes. Gas prices high($2.80-$2.90), food is high, only 1 food store. Have a profession you will do well. Don't have a profession will be difficult to make a living here. There is a hospital and 2 assisted living places. People can be clickish (those w/ control) but most are friendly.

LAKES- because of the lack of rain the past couple of years, have gotten very low.

Only 1 and 1/2 hours from Amarillo TX and 2 and 1/2 hours from Albuqueruqe. Santa Fe is 2 and 3/4 hours away.

You have the best of both worlds in NM. You have lakes for fishing, scuba diving, water skiing and swimming. YOu have the mountains for hiking, fishing, canoeing, water rafting and snow skiing. Tuc is perfectly located to get to any of these thing in 3 hours or less.

We did not have any snow this year!!! Which was shock. We usually get 2-3 good snow storms. Just barely got any rain last week, 2 inches.

Sheep? Not sure how well sheep do here.

Default Refreshing To Here Someone Speak Candid

Thanks Reneeot for being honest and telling not only the good of Tucumcari but the bad too. You didn't sugarcoat anything but just told the plain truth and also you were helpful in giving information that really goes to the matter of the questions. My hat is off to you!
