moving from Holland to Hobbs NM (Roswell, Artesia: crime rate, homes, employment)

This summer me and my family are moving from Holland to Hobbs New Mexico. Please tell me everything (positive you know about Hobbs.
Our children are 6 and 10 years old. What school is a good one and in what grade will they be??
Really want to talk to people who live in Hobbs or in the area.

I could tell you a lot about Hobbs. I grew up in Roswell, another small city in south eastern New Mexico. I'll admit, I have notactually been to Hobbs in years, but some things don't change.

If your children are 6 and 10, this would generally place them in the "first" and "fourth" grades respectively. I couldn't say from my distance from Hobbs what schools are good and which are not.

You will find the people there very friendly and helpful by and large. Hobbs is very flat for New Mexico, so it's a good place to go cycling, but you won't find too many things there catering to bicyclists.

The humidity is very low, in sharp contrast to the Netherlands.

I think you may find the crime rate and demographics troubling. May not be the best place place if you are a white family coming from Europe.

I don't know Hobbs that well but I will say that you should really research this as I have not heard very good things about the area...find a good realtor and find out what areas are more desireable. Homeschool if you must.

Weather is nice, they do get some severe weather off and on, possibly a few tornadoes here and there..

Crime rate on most of NM/TX border towns is pretty high. You will have to look hard at the city and like I already said, be prepared to possibly homeschool your kids to keep them away from drugs and stuff, look into living even live a little outside of the city to stay away from undesireables.

Many of NM schools are lagging and facing serious drug/pregnancy and gang issues.

Sorry I do not have more positive but at least you will be prepared what to look for so you do not land there completely unaware of your surroundings.

Hmm, well hate to say it but not much to do out there. It's basically a west texas oiltown, resembling Artesia but bigger. I just hope you have a job that pays very well out there so you can afford a private school for your children's sake. The landscape is flat as a board, and peppered with pumpjacks. On the plus side the weather is generally nice, and housing is very cheap. However, you are still on the great plains so expect hail and/or tornado warnings from time to time.

Can I presume you are moving to Hobbs because of an employment opportunity? If so, dig in; if not, I would recommend reconsidering your options.

I lived in the Netherlands for many years. I wish my Dutch was as good as it once was but unfortunately it is nearly gone. If I could I know I could express my opinion in your tongue and make it clearer.

NM is a very different culture even by US standards. Hobbs is small, but not quaint. Every town, village in the Netherlands is quaint and has or did have major services.

I think you and the children may have a difficult time adjusting, especially in the first one or two years. However, adjusting is always possible.

I was born and raised in Hobbs I am a 5th generation from there and Please think twice about your move. if you are moving with a job is there anyway to go somewhere else??? Hobbs has always been a major hub in the drug smuggling problem because it is so close to the Mexican border and only 2 minutes to the Tx line. Then they came in a built a maximum security prison and a casino, those two things are less than 1/2 mile from an airport. to me that means lack of planning!!!! If there is no way to go to another community please think about homeschooling your children, the schools are BAD!! For the same reasons as above, the children learn from there parents. Now i know there are good people there, and come from there I did and I am a good christian, hard working, law abiding citizen, but you MUST be very CAREFUL if you do move to Hobbs. Watch your children, know who,what, where. when and how on them. I currenttly live about 100 miles from there in a town called Midland Tx and we have some of those same problems as Hobbs but not on the same scale and Midland is twice the size of Hobbs. Sorry i could not be positive for you but you need to know what you are getting into!

I dont know much about Hobbs, sorry! I know if you are ready to embrace it. You will love New Mexico though. When i was in Ireland my friend used to bring Grolsh from Holland all the time. There is no other beer like it, except of course my home brew! I drink the Grolsch and then reuse the bottles for my own beer
