OMG. I am so disappointed to read that. Las Vegas is exactly what I am looking at.....easy location to skiing, smaller place (which would logically have less crime than larger places like ALB). I got a packet from the C of C recently.
I want high altitude and a more reasonable cost of living.
I'm currently in HOT West Texas.

Maybe Look At Red River Or Los Alamos
If you want to live near the ski resorts without the high cost of Taos, you might look into Red River, a very small town but safe and not far from Taos or Los Alamos which is a little closer to Taos and Santa Fe then Las Vegas but it is higher in cost and you have to have a job but there aren't a lot of jobs open in any of that area but also not a lot open in Las Vegas either. You might also look at the small towns from Las Vegas to Santa Fe on Hwy 84 or along Hwy 64 from Tierra Amarilla to Cimmaron.

Have you looked into Pecos maybe? Pecos is between Santa Fe and Las Vegas. There is also Villanueva which is on the outskirts of Las Vegas. It is pretty much country living and only about 15 miles or less from town.

Good Choice
Good choice Camesquibel! I forgot about Pecos. It is a small town. Yes that is an area I would look into too. I had an great great uncle who lived in Glorieta many many years ago and was a lumberjack. Glorieta isn't far from Pecos.

I am looking to retire permanently--and am not looking for a job.
I might check out Red River--I've never been there. Taos and SF are out because of the outrageous cost and the tourist-trappy stuff.
Thanks for the info. I appreciate it.

Check out the Enchanted Circle, and Las Vegas NM
I live in Las Vegas, I love it here. It's often overlooked. We have over 900 buildings on the Historic Registry, 2 nice colleges, plus the World College for nice kids from all over the world who are actually High School kids. We have grass lands, and grand mountains. Mountain streams and abundant wildlife. It's only about, or less than 70 miles to the over priced Taos or Santa Fe cities. Do check out Red River. I was there yesterday, ( I go there often, and have for years) it's wonderful. But most us us have to live in a larger town, and go through the mountains to enjoy it's beauty and peace. Happy hunting for a new place. From Enchanted

Do not believe everything that you hear!
I have lived in New Mexico almost all of my life. I love Roswell and "most" of the people in it. It is a small town where you can't go anywhere without running into a friendly face. Sure there is crime but that is everwhere, yes even in small towns. The culture in New Mexico is intoxicating and the state itself is full of history and excitement. The weather is great, the stars and sunsets are amazing, and the people are wonderful. Being an educator myself in the school system I can tell you there are some great teachers and not so great teachers. As far as the schools are concerned I believe that some of the schools who have bad wraps have the some of the parents to blame not just the teachers and administrators. I have been in both schools with a lot of parent participation not just at school but in the home as well as schools with little to no help from parents and believe me their is a big difference. Please do not believe everything that you hear, Roswell is a great town with much to offer. It is as good a place as any to raise children. I have four little ones myself and I am very happy that they are able to grow up here. I hope that I have made you a little more comfortable about a possible move to Roswell.

Living in Fla. We are ready to move back out west. My best friend was born and raised in Roswell. He speaks very highly of New Mexico, the people, culture, green chilies. We are from Durango. It has gotten expensive and grown into a beautiful town ,however we are looking for something a bit smaller. Considering Ruidoso or Red River. My wife and I love to spend time in Albquerque. We have always found the folks to be very friendly. And in the small towns we have met some very kind people. We have never experienced the negative things spoken about on here. Does anyone like living in N.M. besides my friend?
The air is very clean there compared to where we live. We see a few stars at night. Sometimes on a clear night you can see the big dipper...however I have never seen the milky way here. Any suggestions?
Dreaming of looking at the stars in New Mexico....... and seeing Chaco Canyon.......We still believe in the Land of Enchantment.......does anyone else????
