Hi Towanda, I certainly emphathize. When I first started posting I was very surprised at the various negative impressions, and that is in several forums, not just here in New Mexico.

This forums are for information purposes, good and bad. And people will have various kinds of experiences. Have to weigh things as best you can and combine that with your own research and your own impressions when considering prospective places to live.

I work hard, and enjoy the fact that I live surrounded by beauty, many forest trails to be explored when I have a little free time. I manage an Apartment Complex, located in Las Vegas, plus I also work with a Real Estate Company. Therefore I see a lot of people who are considering, or in the process of relocating. I can tell you that New Mexico has much to offer those who embrace the rich history, abundant wildlife, 4 awesome seasons, amazing sun rises & sunsets over majestic mountain peaks, millions of acres of Forest, reasonable priced homes and living, friendly folks and year round recreation opportunities. There is no perfect location in this world, but I honestly believe that New Mexico is as good as it gets. I'm sorry if some of you have not been able to see the forest for the tree's. But then I'm the sort who is always thinking my glass is half full, not half empty, no matter what challenges my life may bring. I encourage you all to find a little joy in your lives, no matter where you call home. I have found it helps if you really try to pass on a little happiness or joy to others. Try to find something to like in everyone you meet, no matter what that first impression was like. Life is short and very fragile, handle it with care. Judge less and love more. New Mexico is not for everyone, but at least vacation here for our cool Summers, or visit Winter Wonderlands at the many states ski resorts.

I'm an artist, a painter and I'm considering moving to NM by the end of the year, I would like to consider the Albuquerque/Santa Fe area. What places would you suggest? that aren't outragiously expensive?

I agree. It helps the credibility of these forums to have everyone's views, positive or negative and in-between, represented. That way, readers can have the info to make up their own mind.

Default Living In NM

Living in Fla. We are ready to move back out west. My best friend was born and raised in Roswell. He speaks very highly of New Mexico, the people, culture, green chilies. We are from Durango. It has gotten expensive and grown into a beautiful town ,however we are looking for something a bit smaller. Considering Ruidoso or Red River. My wife and I love to spend time in Albquerque. We have always found the folks to be very friendly. And in the small towns we have met some very kind people. We have never experienced the negative things spoken about on here. Does anyone like living in N.M. besides my friend?
The air is very clean there compared to where we live. We see a few stars at night. Sometimes on a clear night you can see the big dipper...however I have never seen the milky way here. Any suggestions?
Dreaming of looking at the stars in New Mexico....... and seeing Chaco Canyon.......We still believe in the Land of Enchantment.......does anyone else????
I live in Eastern NM. Yes, you can see the stars most every night and the air is clean. Ruidoso and Red River are beautiful places but a bit pricey. We have some extremely good small towns on the east side. Logan has Ute Lake and they are a developing housing units in this area with a 18 hole golf course. San Jon is located on I-40 with low cost land and cheap taxes. Hope you will consider eastern NM.

Smile You are most welcome Towanda!

I hope that you will discover New Mexico to be the "Land Of Enchantment" that many of us love and call home. I think if people look for the worst, they will find it. Come with an open mind and heart, and I hope New Mexico will welcome and embrace you. I love some much of what New Mexico has to offer, and love being out in the mountains. Make sure you visit Valle Vidal, what we refer to as the Yellow Stone of NM, it's just North of Questa/Taos. Also the Wild Rivers National Recreation area is just North of Questa! The most wonderful area of the state is called the Enchanted Circle, which is a looping hwy that connects Taos, Questa, Red River, Eagle Nest, Angel Fire, then loops back to Taos. I like working this area, you can see photos of the area on my website, at http://www.EnchantedRealty.com
Also google all the above mentioned towns and villages and I think you will see why I love this state! It's a great state to call home, and also play tourist in yourself after moving here! I do that every chance I get, just to go driving and meeting people. I have meet so many wonderful people this way over the years. I can find something to like in just about any one! What ever area of the state you decide to relocate to, coming with a healthy attitude, I don't think you will be disappointed. Happy Trails! From Katherine / Enchanted

So your wonderful post is a breath of fresh air for me. I will be moving to NM later this year after having the dream for 37 years. I am bringing my JOY with me!

Just a quick note here from an ex-Floridian, lived and worked in the Bahamas for a good amount of time. I can say that this Island girl has never felt better about where I am living. I live above Santa Fe 50 miles on the Chama river.
The people I have met are incredible. I became a local right away. I feel safe at night. The living is the most active, with so many choices everyday of ways to enjoy this State. There is a sense of feeling similar in 'ways' on many levels with people. The things that were important in Florida are very different here. There is a better balance politicaly. There is a strong sense of Freedom to dress, speak, and create as an individual as well. There is a deep sense of culture and history that you can seek out and explore and touch
It really is magical and the nights blow away the blaket of stars I slept under in the islands. And there are always 'things' you experience that are incredibly hard to explain! Its is magical at night here, and YES to Chaco under a full moon, lite with snow there is no other place like it! and many other places hardly visited by people, that you will find.
I find that the work ethics here are no different than Florida, To hot to work, to cold to work, coming tomorrow for sure, that is not the price you quoted. That is not different, so plan accordingly.
I wouldn't know where to go, if I had to move~ I said I would never leave Florida and the ocean, Now I know I will come visit but never move back>
Also, I got bitten by a rattlesnake and I joined this forum to connect with other snake bite comrades, hoping to share experiences and after effects*

You ain't lying LLD. It got so bad on the el paso threads that certain people would attack me just because i talked good about EP that i had to send a personal message to the Texas moderator ''Austin Traveler'' and i was told that it won't be tolerated any more with posters being permanently banned ...

Also some beautiful places in Southern NM like the Mogollon Mts in western NM where Silver City is at with huge mountain ranges and lakes and streams going all the way over to Flagstaff. The Sacramento Mt's in the central part where Ruidoso, Cloudcroft and Alamogordo are and the highest peak in all the southern United States (Sierra Blanca Peak 12,003 ft) and the Guadalupe Mt's in the eastern part where Carlsbad is located where the highest peak in Texas (El Capitan Peak 8.085 ft) is right across the state line and Sitting Bulls Falls are also located.

My hubby and I hope to relocate to Alamogordo within a year. We were there for our honeymoon (hubby has tried to move there for 15 years) and it is beautiful although short on good restaurants.

See you there!
