Anyone live in Tucumcari ?
I'd like to say hello first then ask some questions about Tucumcari...from what we;ve read it's a small town of 2500 but no economy other than RT66 pass thru's from Tx which is fine for us...does anyone on this forum actullay live there or close by and is willng to take some pictures for us? We are interested in buying a RV park in the area....also in Ramah....anyone from that area?
We recently spent a week in Roswell (nice town) making an offer on some property that taxed out at $30,000 but the owners wanted 10x that to sell....
obviously we're back home in the NW searching for our piece of NM to relax and watch the grass turn brown....
Anyone with advice on Tucumcari, feel free to message me...or post to the public...........
Thanks

Tucumcari is just kind of out there LOL!
There is Conchas Lake which is nice, a grocery store.
Little economy or growth. Very quiet, cheap.
Windy at times especially when there is a storm brewing or in the winter the wind can get rippin good.
I would rather live there than Roswell.
The only pictures I have are of Conchas lake. They are buried somewhere in the boxes I have not unpacked yet from the recent move..if you are interested I will dig them out.
here is the town's website:
http://www.tucumcarinm.com/
Pretty much flat terrain with some mesas and arroyos which are dried up stream beds carved into the rock. During a flash flood they can suddenly get innundated with water. You can see for miles on end and the sky is just a nice shade of blue. They do get winter up there but not as much snow as Alb or Taos area.
The next large city would be Clovis which is a little more than 1 hour drive south east on quiet back roads. Once saw a huge tornado out towards House NM..it was about 15 miles away and still quite scary! You can get some really nasty storms up that way (and in Roswell too) so be conscious of the weather.
I don't know as anyone here has actually lived in Tucumcari. I did not, I visited a few times and that was about it. I hope the town's website can answer some of your curiosities.

I am from Tucumcari
If you are looking for cheap property, Tucumcari is it. Conchas Dam (Lake) is about 30 miles away to the Northwest. Ute Lake State Park is about 22 miles to the Northeast. They are great lakes. Both of them. I grew up in Tucumcari so I know a bit about that town. As a matter of fact I am moving back after the first of the year. If you are looking to buy an RV park I think there might be a few on the market. I know one of the RV owners recently passed away. You might try this link
http://www.nbeginnings.net/
Tucumcari used to be a lot bigger. When I grew up the town was not bypassed by I-40 so we grew up with all the traffic from Route 66 going right through town. It was great and the population at that time from the late 60's until the early 80's (when the bypass of I-40 was complete) the town had a population of more than 12,000. The economy took a big hit when the I-40 bypass was complete. We had many motels, restaurants, curio shops, etc at that time. Now not so many. It is a quiet little community, not a lot of crime and a good place to retire. As for young ones, not so great. I am currently living in Artesia about 35 miles south of Roswell. The reason that you got priced out in Roswell is that everyone is looking to make a killing. Roswell is only 35 miles north of Artesia, where the Federal Law Enforcement Training Center is getting huge. That is why property in the Carlsbad/Roswell/Artesia area has jumped. Homes that would have went for $40K a few years back are now selling for 100-150K.
Tucumcari is great, but not for young kids. There is not that much to do, but I would look into it. Good Luck.

about Ramah
I forgot. My husband was born and raised in San Rafael New Mexico near Ramah and Grants. That is beautiful country. A lot higher elevation than in Tucumcari and more snow.
Here are some url's for you

That is why it would be better to search the Gallup Independent first. I always look at Gallup's paper just to find Obits for Grants and San Rafael. They take a few weeks to make the Beacon's paper. That is online. I haven't been to Grants in a few years so I am not sure about the print paper.
Hey you will be getting snow over there (Gallup) today, eh? YIPPEE I LOVE SNOW!!!

So far, no snow.
And I didn't find the Independent to be much better. Also, why are there NO classifieds in these papers? I mean, there are usually about two ads, and they are for either old computers or looking for volunteers for something or other. Most newspapers have ads for jobs, appliances, furniture, homes, and other miscellanea. All these things, I needed when I moved here, and usually the paper is the first place to look. I learned quickly that the only way to find what you need is to network. Which is difficult when you've moved from 800 miles away.

no snow yet?
It's getting cold down here in the oil patch--Artesia. Yesterday it was something like 80 degrees today it's down to about 45. Go Figure, this is NM, crazy weather. My kids up in Tucumcari said that it is getting really cold up there already in the 30's. They had better keep my grandson warm.
Yep the newspapers in the state of NM have a lot of craziness. I keep looking online at the
http://qcsunonline.com/
and cannot find anything employment or housing. Just crazy.
Yep networking is the way. Look at the state website
http://www.state.nm.us/spo
you might find something there.

I have lived in Tucumcari for the past 15 years, raise sheep, cattle and livestock guardian dogs. Good people, fair land, low cost of living, irrigation when the lake is up, great place to retire to. Medical help locally, big medical help within 120 miles in Amarillo or 150 miles west to Albuquerque. Well water in the country is shallow but limited in quantity and quality.
I also know a little about Ramah,NM. I beleive it is a Mormon farming community. Pretty country, pleasant folks, nice lake used for irrigation. Land could be pricey. Long way to medical, airport, big shopping, etc.

I live in San Jon which is about 20 miles from Tucumcari. The taxes here are low, the land is affordable, air is clean, skies are clear. I believe you will find alot to do here. Conchas and Ute Lake are close. Ute Lake is growing by leaps and bounds with a new 18 hole golf course being constructed. Check out the entire area around Tucumcari, we have some great smaller communities that would love to have you join us.
