I am thinking of moving to NM from Colorado to retire in a few years. One of my life long loves is fishing. I have really been into Bass fishing over the years and I have enjoyed fishing some of the lakes in New Mexico.
So I guess I was hoping for some suggestions on a location in a smaller town with fairly mild climate close to some decent fishing. Housing cost is a consideration as well. I know almost anywhere in New mexico is beautiful.
I imagine this thread will get moved, but Silver City is a possibility. The record largemouth for the state of NM was caught in Bill Evans Lake near there, and there are a few other mid-elevation lakes in that area as well. The Gila River also flows through that part of NM if you fish for trout.
Yeap almost any of the large lakes in the state would be o.k. for Bass.
Abiquiu and Navajo lakes for up north.
Cochiti, Conchas, Sumner, Ute and Santa Rosa lakes in the Center.
Elephant Butte, Caballo and Brantley lakes in the south.
Thats the lakes that i know of where you can enjoy Bass fishing.
TorC/Elephant Butte would fit well. Particuarly if you're looking for warm weather. Lot's more fish than Bill Evans just not the big one...yet. Cheap housing too.
I went fishing for stripers in the Butte last year, and got completely skunked! I hired a charter boat, brought my father in law and brother in law with me, and all three of us came back with nothing.
In contrast, I went to one of those trout fishing farms in Cloudcroft, where you fish in a stocked pond, and pay by the inch. That's a lot of fun, but gets very expensive very quickly.
Fish? Ethyl Lake, Yukon Territory, Canada. I don't know how to FISH but I landed 3 Lake Trout and a Greyling in less than one hour from a Folboat canoe just off the campground. That was 20+ pounds of fish at about 5 lb each. They say the lake record is over 40 lb. for trout.
I have a friend here at work that is a bit of a fanatic about trout fishing in New Mexico.
We have some pretty good Bass (Trout and Cat also) fishing over at Clayton Lake State Park here. Climate never gets too hot, at least not IMHO. It does get bitter cold in the winter on occasions though. Housing is really low, but no doubt as things inthe town and State expand that will change a little.

I don't think I've ever heard of anyone having poor fishing trips to Canada (I'm told the bugs can be difficult to tolerate in places, however). I am anxiously awaiting the day I get my turn to do some fly-fishing on northern waters.
New Mexico is perfectly fine for now, and fanaticism over trout is fairly widespread. Backpacking up to some of our beautiful alpine lakes and headwaters and tossing woolly buggers to risers is my idea of time well spent.

There have been lots of great fishing stuff posted here, but I bet that davya would like small town suggestions along with that.
I posted Tucumcari since it is small, mild weather and close to a number of decent lakes in Eastern NM.
Truth or Consequences is an obvious choice near Elephant Butte.
AndyJ mentioned Silver City with nearby lakes.
There are lots of small towns, lots of lakes, but towns close to lakes?
"Close" of course, varies from person to person, but I'd say one hour driving time or less, personally.
