Your post made me laugh because I know the feeling. I had trouble finding decent pork steaks in Las Cruces. I can't imagine trying to find them in Alamogordo, much less a pork shoulder roast with skin on! I am not aware of a decent butcher shop here. We bought ground beef at Albertson's once, didn't realize it was Halal approved until we got back home. It's funny that they had Halal beef from Australia, but basic pork steaks were no where to be found. And the butchers there didn't have a clue. Sam's Club is usually where we end up buying our meat.

Well, Albertson's finally decided they couldn't get this for me. I was going to ask at Lowe's but had to go to Walmart this morning. I normally avoid their meat department because the bags of frozen chicken feet kinda gross me out. However, as I was wheeling my cart past the puerco section, what do I see but bone-in pork picnic roasts with the skin on? Sheesh.

It is not exactly an exotic cut. Only skin has fallen out of favor among the cutting edge 1970s/80s model of health consciousness.

The Smiths by me (one of the most limited in selection in the whole city) always has whole shoulders. But skin on is the trick. On the other hand, any real butcher shop or carniceria will have it or cut it.
