We have rented a cabin in Upper Canyon near Ruidoso for July & August and haven't found much info on-line for what to expect that time of year. What is the elevation there? Is the hiking "just up the street," or does one have to drive to good hiking trails? Any info on the area would be appreciated.
I've been to Ruidoso many times over the years since the 1970's so my info is.......your in the midst of the Lincoln National Forest as there are trails all over so you can hike from your cabin or drive 5 minutes or so and be in town. The elevation is around 7,500 and the days in summer will be in the 80's and nites in the low 60's so i'd bring a sweatshirt for the evening hours.
About 6750 ft with the elevation going up from there. Unless you happen to be at a trail head you might want to drive. Upper Canyon is a heavily treed valley along the Ruisdoso River on the west side of town. I'm pretty sure that you run into the Indian reservation as you go west from there, but if you go north a ways and then west there is a nice wilderness area and great hiking.
July and August is the rainy season, so afternoon thunderstorms are fairly common. IMO it is never hot here... a high of ~80 is normal that time of year, and if it gets over 90 it will be very dry. If the rain hasn't happened, the forest could be closed for fire danger.
Ruidoso's official elevation is 6,900 feet. I don't know Upper Canyon. Could be higher or lower. Also, July and August are in the monsoon season. Be careful with thunderstorms. You'll most likely want to hike in the morning, before the storms, or in the late afternoon. The lightning can be deadly. I come close to being killed about once a year. I find it kind of thrilling for me, but you may not want this as part of a family vacation.
Can you tell me why it's your favorite part of Ruidoso?
Because it's away from the touristy hubbub (at least it was last time I was there), sort of a suburb of Ruidoso, but close to it when you need something. And it is beautiful up there!
Sounds like we're headed the right way, "catman!" Yahoo!
