As of midnight this morning, there is no more Governor Richardson (except perhaps as an honorary title).

Governor Martinez has some big problems to address; it's this voter's hope that fiscal and monetary issues dominate the Governor's agenda more than wedge, partisan, or states' rights.

Gary Johnson looks a lot better in hindsight than I remember at the end of his term; will we see another one of him in this new governor?

Well, lets hope we see some Gary Johnson. However, I doubt we will. Just pray for G-d or whomever or whatever you believe in to guide her and make sure she doesn't hurt our state.

Regardless of her views, I think she's going to find it a lot harder to "swing for the fences"
than she thinks.

I truly wish her well because my tail is dependent on her doing a far better than average job...

I think you'll find that Governor Martinez is a lot like Gary Johnson. His administration's record has been a shining example for Republican governors across the country.

I'm not a Republican, but do vote for some. I hope our new governor can shake things up a bit, cut thru some BS, and get both the NM economy and, especially, NM EDUCATION on track. It's gonna be a tough job, particularly with a whopping deficit to fix, but I wish her the best of success in Santa Fe.
Nice to have a "Southerner" in the governor's office also. S. New Mexico is tired of being considered a backwater.

What did Johnson do? He took pride in fighting with the Legislature and vetoing as many bills as he could. He did nothing in his administration except give New Mexico the reputation of the pot smoking governor.

Now everytime someone blames Susana for doing a bad job, we can just blame it on good ol' Bill Richardson.

Since thats what people do to bush.... except Fat Bill left us in a hell of a mess. Poor little New Mexico.. only 1 Million people.. and $700,000 in the hole.

There's a huge difference between the conditions in New Mexico at this transition point and the state of the USA (two wars and the worst depression in many decades, a collapsing financial, and banking system, for starters) in the last presidential transition. The comparision, while probably mentioned as humor, is not there. Neither is 1 million people... where does that nugget come from?

If you look at table 1 on this page States Continue to Feel Recession you'll see that New Mexico has a lower deficit (as a percentage of the budget) than almost all other states for 2011 and the same thing is true for 2012 projections. Of course "projections" are the key word here.

So Gov. Martinez actually has less of a task before her than most other governors in the country. I don't want to minimize the job ahead...she's got her work cut out for her....but relative to the rest of the USA I'm not sure I agree with the near hysterical complaints about the state of the State of New Mexico. There are serious problems, spending must be cut and revenue raised, but this is doable, and not the apocalypse some make it out to be.
Additionally, New Mexico always finishes among the top recipients of US government money, especially as a percentage of money paid IN to the US. So I hope you'll also be campaigning for steep cuts in federal spending in New Mexico in order to help with that Federal deficit. Right?

More so than most Republican governors. She is more in the mold of West Coast and Northeast Republicans. At least she doesn't invoke Jesus every third sentence, but she doesn't seem to want make a mark on personal freedoms.

Agreed. Unfortunately most Republican states consider Gary Johnson to be a cross between the devil and a very unfunny joke.
