Thanks Clairz for opening the doors to Clovis for me - who knew?!?!? ;-)
Nice neighborhoods in Clovis-what-i-saw-sept.-8-2007(Not a zoo resident--this lady lives down the street)

Dear Soggy,
It's apparently easy to get the wrong idea about Clovis. Years ago, on our first move to New Mexico (NH to Las Cruces) we drove through Clovis on Hwy 60/84/70, which goes through the motel section down along the railroad tracks. I was less than impressed with Clovis, to say the least, and so would anyone else be who saw only that part of the city. There are cities all over the country that have the same problem. It's only when you get away from the highway and into the neighborhoods that you start getting a feel for a place.

In the case of Clovis, once you meet the people who live here you really start to get attached.

I know that there are young guys out at the base who find the nightlife "boring" but that's never what I've been looking for. After living here just a year we are finding that we have to budget our time on the weekends in order to pick and choose between the social events. In the last couple of weeks alone we've had the chuck wagon cook-off, calf roping, several community breakfasts, two plays, the Santa Fe Opera, and a film festival. All that plus my usual volunteer activities (at a school and with the Literacy Council and at the Senior Center), swimming at our newly refurbished pool, and biking. There is that zoo you mentioned and an exotic animal farm. There are even three golf courses; one public, one private, and one at the base.

Forgive me for going on, but I plan to keep on blogging about Clovis and putting "My Clovis" videos on YouTube. I think it's time that Clovis got the recognition it deserves.

I asked my parents about the zoo last night and THEY KNEW... Hmmm, I feel deprived. My grandparents rarely get past Portales but my parents are reaching out into Clovis more & more. I remember staying with my grandparents during the summer and my cousin & I would have to BEG them to take us to the movies in Portales. They just aren't the "city" people. Never understanding why we'd want to go into town except to buy groceries. :-) But I am thankful because they both (as did my parents) instilled a great love for the wide-open spaces and tranquility that rural life has to offer.

Keep the blog & pictures rolling! Love them!

And 4 days before we head to SF/Abq to check things out and 28 days before we list our house up here. I hope it sells FAST so we can get down there!

And keep the updates coming in, Soggy! We love to hear about people moving to New Mexico and how it all works out for them. Don't forget your sunblock...
