Martial arts? Well, if you consider Tai Chi and Capoeira to be martial arts, I guess Santa Fe is "full of" martial arts venues... (I just looked it up). NM, full of fights? Must depend on what part of NM you're talking about. I've never seen or heard of a fight in public. But I guess I live in Geezerville, Santa Fe, so...maybe that's to be expected.
NM's a big place, OP, with a large variety of towns and ambiences. There are resort towns, there are little farming villages in the mountains, that go back 400 years, there's the big urban scene of Albuquerque, and quite a few Native American communities. The state can't all be lumped into one basket.
I have lived in both NJ and now NM for many years. This original poster is young and likely hasn't lived more than a 20 mile radius of his birthplace, as so many in NJ are. If he were to move here, he'd still be in shock a year after he moved here. There is no comparable town or city between the two states.
This is common about New Jerseyans. Many people from NJ are natives, and the typical New Jerseyan never travels outside their state much. Their whole world is NJ, seriously, that's why my brother is telling me how the West is gonna suck. Not true. He is an East Coast lover and never travelled to the West except for a few times when he was little.

What kind of job skills do you have?
I am an IT major, so I am looking for IT related jobs that pay at least 50K.

OK, I can see why you're considering ABQ, then. What kind of IT job would you be looking for? There are techies in Santa Fe, too; they work for stock brokerages, the community college, St. John's College, Santa Fe Institute (a think-tank that's tech heavy), and the State government, just off the top of my head. The tribes also hire IT specialists, and of course, the national lab in Los Alamos does, as well. I don't have a salary range, but maybe you can find something in your field on these gov't listings, to get a general idea. https://careers.share.state.nm.us/ps...OCUS=Applicant

You've been following these threads, you've seen my posts. I lived on both the East Coast and out West, I grew up in New Mexico. The West won't suck. You'll find it interesting. Whether it is interesting and comfortable enough for you to enjoy living there depends on several things: the weather, the culture, and the geography. Remember this is the desert, wide open spaces. Some people from the East Coast go out there for the first time and are freaked out by the wide-open desert.
The other thing is culture, it's a totally different culture than the East Coast. You might love it, or it might not be your cup of tea. You won't know until you try.
The other thing you're concerned about is crime. My feeling is you'll probably see more of it in NM than you have in NJ, but it won't be an overwhelming thing. You might get your car broken into a couple times. You might occasionally have some guys staring you down in different places.
You've probably seen me complaining about crime in Albq. You have to realize I'm coming from the perspective of a hispanic who grew up in a spanish neighborhood. If you don't fall into these categories, your exposure to crime will be substantially less.
I encourage you to move to NM and try it. If you don't like it, use it as a jumping point to move to Colorado or AZ ( I'm not a fan of Phoenix or southern AZ, but you can try it if you want.).
I mean, you're in IT, why wouldn't you consider moving to Silicon Valley? Move out here you're going to make substantially more than 50K right away and the quality of life here is very good. This is "Out West" too.
Regarding the specific topic of this thread, I can't count the number of fights I've seen on the streets in NM, mostly Albq, but again, I fall into the aforementioned categories.

Hey actually I was thinking of Salt lake City area if I don't like NM. Maybe Utah would be great. Their weather appears to be the same. Their scenery and outdoor activities are stunning too.

I personally prefer California, Colorado, Oregon or Idaho, over Utah or Arizona.

Yeah, if you're a techie, OP, and decide you don't like NM, consider Portland, OR. Or look for a university gig in CA, at UC Santa Cruz, or UC Santa Barbara, or at the various institutes in Monterey, CA. On a tech salary, those places would be affordable. Perfect weather! Beautiful seaside towns.

I change my mind y'all, I'll stick with NM! I was also reading Reddit today too. So, there are nice areas in NM, but I assume I would have to live at least a few miles away from ABQ to be safe. My suburban town in NJ is 11 miles away from Newark and we are super safe in my town although we are not extremely far and although my town is close to 280 for accessing Newark.
