We have been considering south Colorado( Pueblo) for awhile - looking to move somewhere affordable, but rural and be close to aviation options - flight training, flying schools and hopefully one day regionals....is there an area in New Mexico where pilots live and are able to commute to a hub but still be in the country where property is affordable?

Las Vegas, NM has a local airport and looks to be a really neat place.

The Hobbs area has flight schools and glider training.

Also Roswell may be a good fit as Eastern New Mexico-R has the old Walker Airforce base as it's aircraft mechanic school. They train pilots and mechanics for the Airlines all around the country there. It's weird seeing 747's lined up there in a town of 60,000 population at the air base school there.

thanks I probably should have mentioned that he will need find employment as an airline pilot ....either freight or charter work and I presume most of that will be out of ABQ. Will look at the areas mentioned.
Thanks again |

I'd think that you would want to see what airline hires you and then pick one of their hubs?? Chances are you would end up somewhere other than New Mexico??? Or do I misunderstand?? ![]() |

well on one hand - yes who hires him would be important, but the other option is to pursue what we can find in the area we want to be ( and find a second form of income)
Any feedback or local knowledge of New Mexico airlines who seem to only fly in NM? I wonder if LC has a busy freight depo -I believe there are two well established freight companies working out of ABQ. |

The East Mountain area is close to Albuquerque and Santa Fe and access to all of N.M. and they have a Glider Training place there and lots of Activities in the Summer and it would be my favorite place and Affordable. The East Mountain Telegraph and the Independent are two newspapers from the area. pintada kid at webtv.net

Hate to say it, but I think this is a horrible time to be looking for work as an airline or commercial pilot. The guys I know in that game are busy making alternative career plans these days--the ones close to retirement are trying to figure out how to get out and pray that their pension funds don't go belly-up.
I doubt that Albuquerque is a big enough hub to have the job opportunities you are seeking. Around the Rocky Mountain region, the two big hubs are Denver and Salt Lake. Cheyenne, Wyoming is a option--only about 1 hr. and 40 min. drive time to DIA, quite a bit cheaper than the Colorado Front Range, and much more rural and quiet. Wyoming doesn't have a state income tax, but you will pay Colorado income tax if you work out of DIA, whether you live in Colorado or not. There are some nice areas close to Salt Lake City's airport that are also pretty rural. |
