Default Santa Fe - Coyote kills at night???

I lived in Arizona for a few years and moved because I couldn't bear the sound of the coyote kills (screamimg rabbits, etc.) every night. I am now considering a move to Santa Fe and would like to know if it is the same in Santa Fe - or if there is an area where you don't hear the screams of the coyote kills at night. This is not a joke - I'm serious!!! Please let me know! Thanks! Audrey

I live outside the city. We definitely have rabbits -- both types -- and coyotes. I suppose there must be kills. I have never heard the screaming, but maybe I have missed it. I do hear the coyotes and I hear neighbors' dogs reply.

I don't know about inside the city.

I have to agree with you Devin as i have never heard that in my life as we have thousands of Coyote's in Southern New Mexico. We used to see them in our trash cans late at night when i lived in El Paso along the Franklin Mountains but never heard any screams.

Sounds like a question for the forum favorate drum roll ..... Steve o.....lol.....

I live in a less developed part of Rio Rancho and we have rabbits and coyotes all over this area roaming through neighborhoods but I have never heard the screams of dying rabbits.

Me thinks you are misinterpreting the howls and yips of the coyotes as rabbit screams. I have heard a rabbit scream but it wasn't due to a coyote and I've only heard it a couple times in my life. It's not very loud and would be hard to hear if you were any distance away.

For many summer and fall evenings, we used to sit on the portal of our cousin's house in Sunlit Hills in Santa Fe, and there were lots of coyotes and we could hear them howling; it was neat. I never heard any screaming.

Usually screams coming from Coyotes results from them not getting paid. They hate it when someone steals their stash.

To me, the coyotes sound plaintive, more of an unhappy howl, than a scream. Maybe it is frustration.

The dogs sound deeper, more guttural.

I lived in Tucson and loved the sound of the coyotes each night. I don't think rabbits had anything to do with the coyote howls.........Maybe they are the same rabbits that swam out and attacked Jimmy Carter's boat?

Anybody who doesn't know the difference between a rabbit scream and a coyote's howl has probably never lived around either. A rabbit's scream when it's in severe pain or about to die is something you don't forget. When I lived out on the ranch, I never minded hearing the coyotes howl, but the rabbit screams--very sad and pathetic.
