WOW!
You know, I was pondering this possibility about a month ago as I took my son and his friend on a hike up through Baylor Canyon. If an adult mountain lion had ever gotten hold of us, it would have been 'game, set, match'. That is very unnerving. I wonder what the range for mountain lion is in the area.

All over the west! I expect the Mountain Lion (Puma) will be driven out of their southern part of the range by El Tigre (Jaguar). Something has to keep the deer, coyote and stray dog population down.

There is an expanded article in the Sun-News available now. Apparently this happened in an enclosed back yard. Need to bring those pets in at night.

The mountain lion killed a POODLE, not a real dog. Game and Fish should stock lions to thin out the poodle and other foofoo doggie population.

I use to know this... I think its somewhere up toward 100 miles. However, my memory is sometimes shoddy, and this would have been a Minnesota lion range--don't know if it would be different for one in the SW. I do know they have large territories.

Hey, we've had mountain lion caused HUMAN DEATHS in LOS ANGELES!
As stated above, this mountain lion thing occurs throughout the West, even in populated areas, although it's pretty unlikely except at the fringe interface between built up areas and undeveloped areas.
Keep your axx in New York City if you're scared of mountain lions!

People in Las Cruces in positions to know these things believe that this incident was actually a chupacabra attack. They are trying to hush it up lest it lead to widespread panic among the local citizenry. You heard it here first!
