OMG-- not whipping hair! That's the last straw, I must go out and buy a windbreaker for my hair.

I live in Albuquerque. I've lived in several windier places.

But really, the one rest stop between ABQ and Santa Fe is on La Bajada hill, a very windy and exposed spot. The highest spot between the two cities. Much of I-25 where you were driving is very exposed, and when you're cruising at 80 mph you will feel a crosswind. Yes, as some of the signage states "Wind may exist." There's no disputing it. Just like everywhere else. We don't get much in the way of hurricanes or tornadoes in central NM though. Texas is a magnet for both.

I live in Albuquerque. I've lived in several windier places.

But really, the one rest stop between ABQ and Santa Fe is on La Bajada hill, a very windy and exposed spot. The highest spot between the two cities. Much of I-25 where you were driving is very exposed, and when you're cruising at 80 mph you will feel a crosswind. Yes, as some of the signage states "Wind may exist." There's no disputing it. Just like everywhere else. We don't get much in the way of hurricanes or tornadoes in central NM though. Texas is a magnet for both.

We are not discussing "several windier places." We are discussing New Mexico which was the whole reason the OP posted this thread. New Mexico is windy. Albuquerque is windy. Santa Fe is windy. Almost every place in New Mexico is windy.

OP, don't prepare for the wind and don't bring a windbreaker, because aries63 thinks you shouldn't!

Your list shows that ABQ ranks as the 318th windiest location measured out of 548 locations, so we're below average.

Here's a map of average wind speeds in the US. It shows that eastern New Mexico (where few people go for vacation) is windier than average for the US, while most of the state (incl. ABQ and SF) is not very windy:

Average wind speeds:

Albuquerque: 15.87 mph
Denver: 18.53 mph
Colorado Springs: 21.13 mph
Dallas: 14.76 mph
Austin: 15.01 mph
Phoenix: 14.41 mph
Tucson: 16.41 mph
San Francisco: 15.54 mph
Los Angeles: 9.11 (notorious for poor air quality)

So ABQ is less windy than Denver, Colorado Springs, Tucson, and only slightly windier than the other cities listed (except LA), so it is just not the exceptionally windy place that people seem to want it to be.

So if someone is coming from LA, they should prepare for wind no matter where they go. Albuquerque is closest to San Francisco's wind speed, but I've never heard anyone tell people to prepare for the wind if they go to San Francisco.

And one more observation before I shut up: how do you suppose Albuquerque became the "Hot Air Ballooning Capital of the World" if we're such a windy city? You can't go up in a balloon when it's too windy. And people do it here year-round, not just during the Balloon Fiesta in October. If the wind here were such an issue as so many think it is, we would not have this world-wide reputation for excellent ballooning.

As anyone who lives in NM knows some days can be quite windy in spring. But its not constant and there are many non-windy days, so average speeds may not reflect it. But different people react to wind differently. Wind has never bothered me much, but my mother used to always complain about it. "Oohh, that wind!" Maybe when I get to be that age I will too. But even though it doesn't bother me I can't deny there are usually a lot of windy spring days. If its a cool day, I try to get in my bike riding early because the wind can make it feel a lot cooler.

Old ladies do NOT like their hair messed up by the wind. It takes so long to get the thin areas covered properly.

Spring winds usher in various fronts and weather systems which (like today) can bring beneficial rain. I welcome them. I commuted by bike to work daily for many years here, and the wind never deterred me. Well, maybe once or twice.
