Life, Living, and we want to move to Farmington, NM
Hi all,
I read through some of the recent threads about Farmington and I like what I see so far, but the information isn't as exact as I need it to be.
I am being recruited for a job by an energy company. Right now we are in Tucson. It's myself, my wife and our two young sons (3 and 5), and we're very poor here. The energy company job offer would put us solidly in the middle class. We want a better life for our sons and we just can't make it happen the way we want to in Tucson. I LOVE Tucson, and will go back someday, it's just that right now the opportunity is in Farmington.
So, the first thing I was wondering about is housing. What does a 3 or 4 bedroom house in the country lease for on average?
Could you please tell me about the different areas/districts? My five year old starts school in the fall. Is it just one big school district in the area, or does every town have its own school system? And if so, what are the better ones (i.e. Art and music programs are a must, and sports, etc.)
What are the better, peaceful areas in the country? I don't want to live on top of the mountain, up a 10 mile long 4WD road, but I don't want to be able to throw a rock and hit the neighbors house either. Right now we live in an apartment for the first time in years and we find it very unsatisfactory. (A three and five year old boy...They're LOUD!!! And "boys will be boys" the old adage goes). We want our boys to grow up knowing about and raising their own animals and fruits and vegetables and things like that. Our five year old already shows an interest in hunting and they like Elk and venison. "Daddy, daddy, shoot the deer so we can eat it."
And what about activities, like Head Start for our three year old. Or music and art programs, as our five year old wants to go to art school (Tucson has good charter/specialty schools) and our three year old says that he wants to learn how to play the drum. Is there a swim club at a local YMCA or the school that is open for all residents to join not just students? How is the little league, soccer, etc? Parks, museums, kid friendly family activities. Our boys are used to having lots of different choices in places to go and things to do.
I really want a good life for all of us and it seems like the monetary aspect can be handled with this job offer. Now I'm wondering how to put together the people, education and growth part of it. I want my family to have a fairly nice house to live in, big yard, lots of animals and fresh vegetables, and a safe place to grow up.
Please feel free to email us at black_petal@yahoo.com. Please include in the subject line "RE: Farmington" so it doesn't get accidentally deleted. We Freecycle, Craigslist, among other things so we get a lot of email daily.
Does anybody know of any decent places to lease that are in a nice area, with a little bit of land, pet friendly (we have a cat that likes to strike fear into all things small and fuzzy), etc.?
Thanks for any help that anyone can provide.

Farmington has its own school district. All of the outlying towns have their own school districts as well, except for the kirtland/shiprock area (central consolidated school district).
Farmington is unusually high when it comes to home prices for New Mexico (outside of Santa Fe and Albuquerque). To get more bang for your buck, you may want to look outside of the city, say Aztec, Bloomfield or Kirtland. However, since one of your sons is starting school next year, that should play a role as well. As far as school districts, Farmington Public Schools' Piedra Vista district tends to be seen as 'better' than Farmington High School's district (PV district lies within the newer part of farmington, near the college). When it comes to elementary schools, sorry, as I can not help you out a lot there. I'm sure someone else on these forums could help you out there though.
If you have any other questions, feel free to ask away or email me if you'd like.
Good luck!

I would be interested in info as well on rentals in the Aztec area, especially rural,
where there is some acreage and the opportunity to put in a raised bed garden,
and/or have some chickens and maybe dairy goat in the property. We would also
need to have pet friendly landlords, as we have 2 cats and a dog. Thanks so much!
Is this something that is totally out of the question in the Aztec area, or is it a
dream come true new life & home for me?
I can be emailed directly at Aztec_NM_Bound at yahoo.com
Thanks!

from what I hear from my girlfriends family that the oil field is always hiring, they have a hard time finding and keeping people due to drugs.

Try this link to the classified job listings in the local paper. There is still work to be had up here, especially if you have a trade. There never seem to be enough plumbers or electricians. The oilfield is fairly steady right now, with the majors like Halliburton and BJ Services and Weatherford always looking for drivers. If you have a CDL, a clean driving record, and can show up on time every day clean and sober you can work for just about any national company up here. I don't want to over sell it, but it's hard to find people who will work hard around here for some reason.
I will caution you that housing is relatively expensive compared to other places in the southwest. Not terrible, but we don't have an oversupply of affordable housing up here.

mike71469--
Im pretty confident you will find a decent job in Farmington when you get there, my g/f's dad said they need plumbers too and people with CDL's. If there was any city in New Mexico that would be easy to find a job I would say it would be Farmington, I use to live there but it just aint the city for me due to g/f family and other people.
