Default You Know You're in New Mexico When...

We've all seen the lists--you know you're in New Mexico when...
You know what the waitress means when she asks "red or green"
You know what a horny toad is
You keep an extra freezer just for green chile...

There is so much creativity on this forum, I'm sure we could make up a whole new list of our own. I'll start with a modest contribution, but I know you guys will do lots better.

You know you're in New Mexico when...

You say "Nice day, no wind!" whenever the gusts are below 40 mph

Your idea of a perfect lawn ornament is an old pickup that doesn't run

Nose-blowing at the table is considered a compliment to the chile and not bad manners

You've driven 580 miles round trip for the best green chile cheeseburger in the state, regardless of the price of gas

Okay, it's your turn!

I know I'm in New Mexico when the skies open up, there is always a mountain in your view, and the cities aren't too big. There's something about the air too but I don't know how to describe it.

You know you're in New Mexico when many of your friends and relatives in other states think you have moved to a foreign country....or keep referring to your new residence as "Arizona."

You know when you're in New Mexico (at least parts of it) when you order enchiladas and the only questions the waitperson asks are, "Red or green?" and "Would you like a fried egg on that?" And, when you get them, the tortillas are stacked, not rolled. You also can spot someone who either lives in New Mexico or has been there a lot because neither the questions, nor how the enchiladas look, surprises him or her.

And because they are still smiling happily as the tears roll down their cheeks from the heat of the chiles...

You know you're in New Mexico when the rain is very welcome and after a rain, the air smells fresh and so clean.

You know you're in New Mexico when you'd rather be outside than inside.
