Route 70 in New Mexico
Needing to know if New Mexico 70 is a suitable route for a U haul pulling a car carrier, if not, can you suggest a better road?

Well there are several steep climbs on it i.e. over the Organ Mountains in Las Cruces and the Sacramento Mts climb to Ruidoso so i guess it depends how far on it your traveling and how strong of a vehicle pulling the load is.....

Thanks for your replies... I guess I am wondering the grade % and if there are switchbacks, runaway lanes, that sort of thing. We will be going westbound, if that makes any diff.

26'-the largest available, should be well under on rated weight. Small car on carrier.
What would be the time difference on going to Albuquerque and down 25 to 10 vs. route 70?

Rutha...you still haven't mentioned where you are coming from (point A) and to where exactly you are heading to (point B). If can tell us then i or others can tell you exactly which route to take with you pulling a heavy load so you'll be o.k. U.S. 70 doesn't hit I-10 so are you heading to/thru El Paso or Las Cruces?? Are you heading towards Arizona or West Texas ??

Sorry for the confusion-was planning to head southwest on 60 south of Amarillo, across NM on route 70 and pick up 10 near Las Cruces, heading west on to Tucson. I guess what I was thinking was that I was using all of route 70.

The only high point is right before Cruces to go over. It has a slow lane for trucks so should be no problem.

Rutha, I don't think you should have any problems. I drove a smaller U-haul (I think the 19footer) pulling a honda civic through the forest in oregon with some of the most treacherous winds and steep climbs anywhere in the country. I made it through just fine.
