Pony Express Rides Again... Pep, NM
The Pony Express is coming to Pep, NM (Roosevelt County, Eastern NM, about 24 miles south of Portales) July 5, 2008. (Clairz, I see another entry to your blog... add it to the list)
I don't have a lot of details yet but at this time - but mail will be brought by horse-back (Pony Express) from Milnesand, Elida, Causey, Dora, Crossroads & Rogers, NM with each rider leaving their respective Post Office at 7 AM. The mail will be delivered at Pep amidst lots of festivities.
There will be a special Pony Express postmark to commemorate the day.
To date there are 60+ riders signed up to participate in the Express ride.
A neighbor hosted barn dance and free BBQ will be held that evening about a mile south of Pep.
More info as I hear of it... or if someone else has more info please chime in.

Kind of interested in this.
Currently it take 3 to 4 days to get a priority mail envelope from Alamogordo to El Paso. Less then 100 miles!
Maybe going back to the pony express will speed things up just a little!

Sounds like great fun. Please remember that the efficiency of horses at a one horsepower output is measured in miles per bale of quart of oats. How many miles per bale does a Pony Express horse get. How many miles per green chili cheeseburger and quart of beer does the rider get?

That is just too cool Soggy as i love exploring/reading about the ''Old West'' and it's nostalgia. I wish we in NM would feature more of our 1800's Ghost Towns/Mining Towns and all the happenings in them from back then.

They did that last year too here in Clayton. Was pretty neat to watch. They did it the same day as the Santa Fe Trail Horse Race came through too.

My parents thought it had happened elsewhere in NM but couldn't remember where - maybe Clayton is where they were thinking.
The new 'owner' of Pep hopes to make it an annual occurence. The USPS is, of course, on board "as long as they end with as much mail as they start with".
I think it would be a great event to see. Hopefully next year.
Mtncat - WOW, mail gets from here to there quicker than that. But I do remember mailing a package and the postal worker there told me that NM was about the slowest for mail delivery in the country.

They use to have the Pony Express Races in White Oaks every year. I only went to one and it was the last one i ever went to. Poor Horses are Ridden into the Ground and almost have to be Carried Across the Finish Line. el pintada kid
