Is New Mexico a southern state?
I'm not kidding. You have high baptist populations in the eastern plains counties, it's very conservative, has a lot in common with Texas and Oklahoma.

Baptists and conservatives do not make a state a "southern state".

Well what would you categorized Arizona as?
I would say SOUTHWESTERN, especially since NM is between AZ and TX.
Who says it is conservative? It seems to me that the bigger cities are liberal and then smaller towns are mostly conservative.

IMHO opinion NM is a western state. I would be hard pressed to consider Texas a southern state. Texas is a transition state. NM is nothing like Louisiana, Mississippi, etc., Baptists not withstanding. West Texas is more like NM than it is like East Texas.

NM is not southern. It's not really conservative, either. I'd class it as more moderate.

Eastern TX is "southern". West TX and eastern NM are transitional "southern high plains" areas. Western NM on is "southwestern". I think west TX and eastern NM are more like each other than they are the rest of their respective states. It's all labels, anyway.

New Mexico is Southwestern geographically, and due to its proximity to Texas it has adopted many of its Southern traits. Likewise due to Texas bordering New Mexico, it is a Southern state that has adopted many Western traits.

Can't add much as everyone pretty much answered that but compared to the south .....there is no comparison. I have lived in NE Florida and have familiy in SE Georgia and trust me New Mexico is not like the deep south. Yes Eastern NM is more conservative but my feel of the conservatives out there are more of the Libertarian (sp) type than the religious types. I think alot of the ranchers and farmers out there like the openess of the land and also freedom from Gov intrusion. That's not to say that there are not some hard core religious groups but as a whole it's low.
Anyway that's my take from living in New Mexico and Florida in my life.
