Default Silver City Retirement?

We are looking to establish ourselves in the US after several years in Mexico. We have an RV and limited income, but might sell the house in Mexico to buy one in the States if not overly expensive. My husband is a rural type; I am an urban/arty one. We both love mountains and trees. We are liberal and independent but like some social life. Would Silver City have things to offer us? It looks great on the net, but we'd love to hear from some folks who live there. I lived in New Mexico in the 60's, and ran a trading post on top of Mt. Sandia - loved it. Have always wanted to go back and can't afford Santa Fe or Taos. Might Silver City also be too expensive? Like to dialogue with one or more folks who live in the area whom we could meet. We'll be coming up to spend the winter and look around. Thanks.
