Default Moving to Alamogordo Need General Info

I am in my mid-30's, single, and love to hike. I know there's plenty of hiking around Alamo, but what about the city itself? Is it a nice, relatively safe place to live? I lived in Farmington and did not like it much. My dog was attacked by a Pitbull and I don't want to have to worry about that in Alamo. Also, does the place stay windy all the time or just springtime? Please give me any feedback you may have about the place.

First off have you read any of the former posts about Alamogordo. If not I would suggest doing that. You can see many of your questions there even before you think of them.
I like Alamo, and feel its a safe city. You will have problems anywhere you look, just be mindful of where you move to.
Windy? most of this does come in the spring. This year we have had a little more than we cared to. But you can't tell mother nature what to do.
I hope you find the answers to your questions.
Jane

There's miles upon miles of hiking trails in the nearby mountains and lower canyons that edge up to Alamo.

I have no idea whether you'll like Alamo or not but i agree with Chilegal and others as a visit is the best way to get a feel good or bad.

Default Thanks for Reply but What about.......

Well, I have been to Alamo but it has been several years. I don't believe it is as homely looking and unsafe (for my dog) that is, as Farmington. Are there nice areas to walk dogs? Also, as I mentioned, I am single and in my mid-30's and hope there are better opportunities to meet interesting guys in Alamo than Farmington or Las Vegas, NM, as I also lived there for three years and had to drive to Santa Fe or Taos if I wanted to meet interesting people who weren't hooked on Meth or drunk all the time. Thanks for the reply

Well, I don't drink or do drugs, and I like to think I'm interesting. But I'm not in Alamo. I'm in the mountains to the east, and I have good news and possibly bad news for you.

The good news is that there are plenty of places to hike and walk dogs in this region. Down around Alamo you'll find the Dog Canyon and Oliver Lee State Park area. I've never been there, but my neighbors have gone for hiking and dog walking. Up here in the mountains there are tons of trails, campgrounds, and other recreation spots. Many of them are closed right now because of fire danger, but they will open up again eventually. We're just waiting for rain. Between Alamo and Cloudcroft, there's a 16-mile stretch of highway with places to stop and hike or walk dogs. These include the Rim Trail, which overlooks Alamo and goes out to Sunspot. You can also head up toward Ruidoso for even more such opportunities.

The possibly bad news is that I can't say much for the singles scene here. That's probably because I don't go looking for it, but people I know who have say there's not much out there. The cliches I've heard are that everyone is either married or, if single, in the military and just passing through.

The quality of a singles scene is of course a matter of taste. Your type of guys might not be as common as other types of guys. I don't want to insult anyone or any groups of guys, so I won't say much more than this. If you are looking for the Santa Fe and Taos types of guys, we are definitely in the minority here. So are those types of gals, which is why I just keep to myself and don't go bar hopping or looking.

I'm not saying that there's no hope or that there are no good singles opportunities. I'm sure there are plenty depending on what you are looking for. I hope maybe some other singles might chime in and give you some better ideas, because I wouldn't mind hearing them too.

Firstly Jecc gave some very good info on the area.

Lots of people will hike on Scenic and South Scenic drive in Alamo. Also places like Alameda Park and Zoo and Oregon Park are some nice parks for you and your pet. I wouldn't recommend in the summer but the fall and winter months White Sands National Monument might be a great place to let you and your dog play on all the giant sand dunes there.

As for dating it's a small city of about 40,000 population so options may not be great and you didn't state your taste in music etc.....but since your a female there is a male majority Air Force base there so you may meet an Service Member there.

Talking Thanks and since you're single............

I could care less whether you drink or do drugs, for that matter, I wouldn't mess around with a serious drinker or druggy. I do like my margs or a beer every so often because my job is pretty stressful and by the end of the week I feel I deserve a cold beer. I will be teaching at NMSU-Alamo and am an archaeologist on the side- go figure- we archy's abound in NM. However, I'm just looking for someone to hike around with and talk to. I'm not looking to jump into a relationship, as I think it's not a good idea for any two people to do that before they really get to know one another. But since you are single as am I, maybe it would not hurt to correspond and learn more about each other, that is, if you're interested. If not, that's certainly okay. You sound like a nice guy and you live in the mountains (someday I plan to as well). We might as well find out if we have some commonalities. Do you live near Cloudcroft or Ruidoso, somewhere in that vicinity? I would love to live around there, but it's got to be a bit lonely.

Default Theresa From Alamo

Hi Theresa Welcome to N.M. its the Perfect place for hiking and exploring. Ive spent a lifetime in most of the Mountains of New Mexico and know them Well. Ive driven over 2 million miles of New Mexico Highways and Interstates and about 25 percent of those miles are Dirt Roads. I usually Travel Alone im 58 y.o. male who likes to take pics and go into places few people get to see. At the moment im working on solving the Heberer Lorius case and maybe finding a Creature thats over 200 000 000 years old and just recently while out hiking down an arroyo on a 20 foot high wall there was a Human Skull staring at me with the bones of the rest of his body clearly seen coming out of the wall and other Skeletons down the arroyo. I would think they are Indians but could be Spanish is there a way of find out by looking at the Skull? I took pics but want to go back and get more before it falls. Anyway feel free to contact me if you need information of good places to hike or Ghost towns to Explore or Petroglyphs. HAVE YOU EVER SEEN SHEEPHERDER WRITINGS? pintada kid at webtv.net
