Back when I was in high school, Pat's was the only place in town where you could buy a Dorito milkshake.

I never did though. I'm a man of simple tastes: Triple chocolate.

I would think that would be a choking hazard.

Great posts ya'll!
I recently found out (yesterday) that I'll be pulling some time @ Cannon AFB.
I'm excited, as it's supposed to be near Roswell. I've heard there is a Museum dedicated to the incident?
Is it only me that noticed that Roswell (1947) and the seperation of the Army Air Corps formalizing the USAF also happened in '47?
I've spent most of my career in Atlanta, San Francisco/Silicon Valley and the Florida Gulf Coast. Is there any sushi around? I just spoke w. one of my counterparts who is currently deployed there, and he hasn't seen any yet.
Thanks in advance for any and all comments!
sb

P.S. I read about the Music Festival which sounds really cool. Does anyone know if there are any LAN gaming business about? How about a computer store?

I think you are set up for a big dejection. Clovis is diferent than what you have ever seen. If you have never lived in small rural towns, prepare yourself before you come.
There is a Japaneese Restr. on the 7th street by the name Shogun ........ not my choice, but many people like it .......... then there is a Thai near base area that is supposed to be very good. I dont think any one has great sushi, but I am not a big sushi fan and may not know if there is one.

New West 2020 will become famous soon enoughNew West 2020 will become famous soon enough
Sushi at Hong Kong in Portales is passable for New Mexico, and the buffet is right up there with most of the decent ones outside of Cali. Its not fancy like Shogun but cleaner.

Computer stores? Two computer stores that I know of exist in Portales, on Avenue C and D (the Lovington Highway).

The hard thing about finding anything in Portales is the signs are all small, handmade, and nearly unreadable. Also, half the businesses are not in the phone book, as if you are supposed to know where everything is. "Low key" is an understatement. If you drive around and squint a lot, you will find 2 of everything, eventually.

Be careful at Shogun (S. Clovis) at night. We saw some serious sketchers eying our car. Lubbock has it all, and Roswell has some good choices for food. The UFO museum is cool if you like that kind of thing.

Thumbs up Not soo bad

Clairz
I am a resident of Clovis. I have lived here twice now... one was due to being married to a military man, and the second time (not military related) was because I chose to move back here.
Let me start by saying that I have lived in Minot, ND and LOVED IT! Yes, it was cold and yes it was way, way out there, but I loved the people, the city, the area, the cold, the snow, the town shutting down when it got too cold, the community feeling... I would move there now if given the chance. I have also lived in Clovis several times... the two DO NOT COMPARE!!!! If a person makes that statement then they must rather live with dead people than in places that will bring much adventure! Clovis is what you make it... there is not a lot to do here, but there is a lot to do if you are willing to venture out and discover the town, the area, the state and oneself. I have many, many friends who were military and have since gotten out and then moved back here because of the many opportunities for businesses, the people, the area, the community feeling and the weather. Yes, the weather can get harsh at times, but for goodness sake so can the east coast or the gulf of mexico! There are tornados, but just like everywhere else they come in seasons and only last for as long as they pass through. The BX on base is not the greatest in my opinion... the one is Minot is WAY better! (seriously) But, like you have posted before, Clovis is going to be what you make it to be... As far as purchasing a home, I would suggest anything north of 21st street and perhaps east of Prince street. However, there are really nice base housing areas... the homes here are much nicer than Minot, but Minot has basements and these military housing ones don't! (sometimes you need them here...) There are homes within Clovis that do have basements, those are usually the older model homes. If you are still interested in buying a home in Clovis, I know several realtors on a personal level that I would be more than happy to have you get in contact with. There names are Matt Ware with Exit Reality and Amanda Samora with Coldwell Banker. Both are awesome at their jobs. As with any town, there are going to be those that have something negative to say... perhaps those are the ones that want to leave this town yet never do for some reason or another! Anyway, I feel as though I have been long winded so I will close for now... please feel free to ask any more questions and I will answer them as best I can.

For the people that have lived, or do live in Clovis:

What part of the city would you not want to live in?

What part would you like to live in?

What part of town is the safest? As in my husband will be deploying at some point and I will be a single mother with 2 small children...

Seeing how we are still in Germany it is very hard to get a straight answer out of realtors.

Anyone have anything to say about Cannon Air Force base? As in is it old and falling apart, how is the BX, commissary etc

Also (way off topic) we are looking forward to ,at some point, dipping down into Mexico for some shopping etc.. When I am looking around the net for the closest town in Mexico that has great shopping.. I am having trouble finding what I am looking for.. any suggestions?

I have heard about hail, wind, and tornadoes (My husband is a weather guy) I am curious about how often things that this happen there. Would you suggest that we buy a house with a garage (to protect our cars etc)
I realize that it doesn't happen every weekend etc.. but you would know better than I if it is worth getting a garage

Also does the city have a "lights out" policy.. as in Some of the smaller towns I have lived in have these rules/laws about having to be quiet after 10 pm. Not that we are trying to start up a rock and roll band.. however we would love to be able to have a cook out and not have to cut it short due to time etc.

I am sure I will think of new things to ask! And yes I know that an assignment is what you make of it, however this is the only place that I have heard... "Wow I would rather be stationed at Minot than Clovis".. which made my stomach drop. I am sure I will love Clovis and we will make long lasting friendships

Thanks for the heads up Orlan!

I've lived in fair share of small towns in "out of the way places" for different stints here and there... Lake City, FL comes to mind for instance.. Panama City before it got big 20 yrs ago as a teen and whatnot. I'm a bit of a nomad and learned how to keep a low profile and blend in quickly. As I love to say, life is what you make it, and God pretty much has me walking the Earth again.

Vr,

sb
