I thought it was just me. While we were approching the ABQ airport to land on June 20th, I actually teared up, I felt like I had been away from home for so long although I have not yet lived in ABQ. My first trip was in December and I missed the place something awful. What is it? Just the realization that I have finally found home? I don't know. It was very strange.

That feeling has happened to many many of us.
It's a common reaction to moving here.

We lived in New Mexico for a few years, but I felt like you when I left. Trees and green made me feel claustaphobic. I still hate the closed in feeling of not being able to see the weather coming because it's not so open here.
I also miss going to a Mexican/southwestern style resturant and not having a choice of red or green. Even worse is being served what I refer to as 'Gringo' food because people here think salt, pepper, and a little mild taco seasoning constitutes flavor and spice. It's like ordering salsa and getting ketchup instead.

New Mexican cuisine! There isn't anything close or nearly as good as New Mexican. And you won't find it elsewhere. You might find something similar, or something good, but it isn't New Mexican if it isn't in New Mexico.
We have Mexican here in Los Angeles, and it's just not the same. As an amateur chef I'm a bit puzzled because most of the ingredients are the same either place. It must have something to do with freshness and a few unique ingredients and how it's prepared. If I am able to move to SF I hope to learn New Mexican cooking, even taking classes if that's what it takes.
In my travels Santa Fe is the most delicious city I've visited.

When I interviewed for my job in New Mexico I said that I felt like I had come home. I feel like I must have lived here in another life and this completes the cycle. Bacich

I can definitely relate, RRR. I've been gone for over two years, and I haven't even gotten a chance to visit since then - friends and food are calling my name!
New Mexico is just a very unique place. From the scenery to the people to the cuisine, it's an experience that truly cannot be duplicated anywhere else in the country. You may have heard about it from friends, but until you've visited and gone back home, you don't really know how it can linger in the imagination.
I've been here in Knoxville for a while now, but I still tell people where I'm really from when asked.
