Timberon info please....
Hi. My husband and I are searching for a place to raise our children away from the city hussle. I was researching on the internet and found Timberon. I fell in love with the beauty of the area. We are looking for a good wholesome, family oriented place without a lot of crime to raise our kids. I was hoping someone could give me more information. Where do the children go to school? What size school is it? Are there any rental properties in this area?
I really appreciate any help you can give!!
Thanks

Hi Themphill30:
Welcome to the City-Data New Mexico forum, and congrats on your first post here.
I don't know anything about Timberon except that which I have read here at C-D.
However, I did see that the population is between 309-344 depending on which source you use and the median age is in the mid-50s.
I grew up in a town of 600 people in upstate New York. I am sure the median age was younger and we were surrounded by other towns and a medium sized city, hence, a lot more to do. It was still very small.
I personally would not have wanted to grow up in a town as small and as isolated as Timberon, with limited activites for children. I am wondering how far children in Timberon need to travel to go to school? What do you do when they get older and want to participate in sports, music, other stuff at school?
I have nothing against the town, I just think if you are moving there with children, it seems like there are a lot of valid considerations I would have if it were me. The beauty of the area might not be much of an attraction for kids.
Just my opinion.

Timberon Schools
Currently there are no schools in Timberon. The kids are bused to Cloudcroft about 45 minutes away. The comunity is mostly retired folks
There are a few younger ones making a go with businesses of their own mainly. There are a couple of small convenience stores, a golf course, a realestate office, ATV rentals, a few restaraunts, and a home rental office. If you go to www.timberon.info/ you can get more info. Alamogordo is an hour an a half away it has about 40,000. But if you can make a living and love small towns it is the best of the best. Cool in the summer, and not to cold in the winter and just plumb beautiful all the time.

Timberon
Never been to Timberon but i would think that it is kind of isolated from the bigger cities and i would think forest fires and wild animals running scared and hungry from losing their homes to fires and people would be an issue people should consider but if you love the mountains and mostly crime free areas and good people i would think that Timberon might be a place for some people. I also think that in a bad winter it would be sometimes a week before you could get out regardless of how much plowing is done at night when theres ice the roads can get bad or during windy weather and hospitals and good Supermarkets are things to consider. pintada kid at webtv.net

Pintada, Sorry man but you can't worry about mother nature or you can't live anywhere. She always has something no matter where you live. Didn't I see where a Gorrila killed someone in Dallas, or was that a tiger in San Fran. Shopping you just have to plan, and pick up enough till you go again. Plus 2 small stores here. The roads are cleared very well and quickly the kids have to go to school so it is a priority. Plus there are two back ways out that you can always use, because they do not go thru the upper mountains. I have seen 6'' of snow one day, melted off the next because of the southern Lat. Thats why we like it so much. Not the 'bad' winters further north.

This is a great place to live and enjoy the beauty.
I don't have any kids living here but there are kids that live here. Not sure how they do the school activities as they are bussed into Cloudcroft.
I'm thinking that the kids here, like everyone else need to make there own entertainment.
No crime here or if there is, not much.
If you and your kids are the type of people that need other people or activities from other people, look for another place, but if you can have fun and entertain yourselves with atv'ing, hiking and outdoor activities, you've come to the right place.
Great place to live. I have seen a few rental properties here. Contact Roberts Realty. The number should be on the link that Pipeweld posted above. Full of information.

We are looking at possibly moving to Cloudcroft in the next couple of months (hinges on a job) too. I drove through the town while moving to AZ a few months ago and was wowed by the beauty of both the scenery and the town. The baby was sleeping, so I didn't get out at all (plus it was the beginning of the last day of the 4-day drive!). But my husband spent a week there this Spring for training and fell in love with the town and the people. We are small town people, so we are not put off by the population number. We figure it will be easier to keep tabs on our sons (and their friends) as they grow up. The schools are supposedly #2 in the state, although there are some on this forum that don't think that amounts to a whole lot because the state does not have a good school track record. I don't know how true this is--I haven't researched the entire NM school system--but several people have posted about it.
Have you been to the area yet? Cloudcroft had a nice looking playground, and it looks like it has an actual downtown and several festivals throughout the year. Although it looks like all significant grocery shopping and such is done in Alamogordo.
You can do a search (on the very top bar) for Cloudcroft and Timberon and you will find a lot! A lot of enthusiastic posters re: Timberon!
Oh, and I wouldln't pay too much attention to the post by Pintada Kid (sorry PK, but I think it was a bit dramatic)--wild animals are not going to run out of the woods at you--even with a forest fire. Believe me, they know (for the most part) how to handle a fire and are for the most part shy/afraid of humans. The only exception are bears that have been fed or mtn. lions and you tend to hear about when they are around so that you can be more cautious.
There is a fire danger, but there is almost everywhere in the West. I have all of my important documents in a take-n-carry filing box (more for moving, but works well for fire escape, too), and all my photos in one spot. I'm new to living in the West, but I figure if a fire was nearby, I would keep my documents and photos either by the door or in the trunk of my car so I would be ready to go. Its just about planning ahead.
Oh--and it really doesn't snow that much compared to other places. I'm sure the road crew is able to keep up just fine. If you live on a really, really isolated road, it may take a couple hours, but I don't even think they get road-blocking snow levels.
Anyhow, maybe a house between Timberon and Cloudcroft would work so that it isn't as far to school or the grocery store!

I almost spilled my hot Green Tea on myself as you have me laughing at that ''Crazyme'' .
I haven't been there in about hmm......10 years i believe as it was just before they paved the road from Sunspot to Timberon and then i drove over to Pinon and then to Weed and Sacramento then back down towards Mayhill as it's a big circular trek thru the mountains there. There used to be some nice Camps up there like ''Camp of the Tall Pines'', ''Camp Mary White'' and ''Camp Chimney Springs'' over by Mayhill. Always said i'd have my Honeymoon there as it's so beautiful and you feel like your in Colorado and not Southern New Mexico .
Haven't heard yet from the one who has lived there for a good while and loves it and that is Chilegal as i'm sure she'd have some good info on the positives and negatives.....

OK, I am here..LOL
First off, there are not that many jobs up there. So that is what you may want to think about. As for schools, the kids are bussed to Cloudcroft, and those that go there that I know really love it.
check this site out. TDC Homepage
Its small but the people are friendly and come visit before you choose to live there. Its not for everyone, but those of us that are there love it. Yes we have to drive 1.5 hrs to get to Alamogordo, but you plan your trips. And then when you get down the hill you are ready to turn around and go back up.
And there are a lot of us that have met here that either live in Timberon, or plan on it in the future.

Thank you for putting that in, it has calmed be a bit. I was excited when I first heard it was ranked really high in the state, then unsure when other posters (on different threads) wrote that it wasn't very good. But who better to ask then the kids that go there!
If my husband had been in his current position for a year, we would probably already be in Cloudcroft, so it is very reasonable that we might be there before the end of the year.
