Thank you WHEATEN,
We are about to leave for the shore for a few days. I was wondering about what was in that medicine. We leave Friday AM for NM. Most everything is packed. I know I'll forget something, but no room in the car anyway. I said goodby to the Tuskegee Airmen last night at the convention. Quite a final evening. Lots of love and kisses. I'm feeling some sadness, but this is my chance for NM. We will probably be the oldest couple in the Teacherage. We'll be grandparents to everyone's kids. We don't mind. I do love children. I guess that's why I teach. I have trouble sleeping sometimes because I have so much on my mind about the trip. I know the first time driving 2099 miles will not be easy. We plan to change drivers often. I hope the dogs will settle down. Thai is a live wire. I've never lived anywhere but Phila. Even for collage I lived at home. I was the care giver for my late parents. No way I could go before. My family wishes me well and that I wouldn't go. I've always been a risque taker. It's like that elephant ride I took once at the zoo. Sometimes you just get on and pray that it doesn't bite you in the ___. Bacich

Driving with dogs (and cats)
Bacich, the first time we drove across country from NH to NM with dogs and squawky Siamese cats we got some tranquilizers from the vet but never needed to use them. The cats cuddled in their carrier, talked in loud Siamese for the first 15 minutes of each traveling day and then went silent. On the road, we couldn't get them to drink water, use litter, or go for a walk on their new harnesses. Actually it was more like going for a drag and gathered quite a crowd at the rest stop when we tried. We learned (they taught us) that they just wanted to be left alone. Once we got to the motel each evening, they used their litter, had a big drink of water, a small meal, and a bit of a scamper, and then settled right down.
The dogs were even easier. They were happy to be along with us, seemed soothed by the rhythm of the road, and adjusted quickly to the new routine.
We were very surprised, but the same has held true on subsequent cross country trips with different Siamese and different dogs.

Pets and Moving
I used Rescue Remedy, too, for moving my cat in my car from Washington, DC to ABQ, NM. It worked fairly well...for a high strung cat that is!

Well this is it. We leave early tomorrow morning. I'll be out of touch for awhile. The car is so packed, you couldn't fit a toothpick. We are staying at Motel 6 all the way. They take "a" dog. Ohio here we come. We plan to change drivers frequently and walk the dogs. 550 miles is planed for day one. Every day after a little less. We will arrive in NM on Tues. I'll let you know when I get my computer set up in NM. Bacich

Best wishes for a safe journey and welcome to The Land of Enchantment. Kudos to you for your work with the Tuskegee Airmen. They endured untold difficulties as gentlemen and heros while posting a service record that rivals that of any other squadron in WWII. Your commitment to the Zuni people is commendable as well. You're obviously a difference maker and I'm sure you'll make an indelible impression on the families there.

congratulations, what a dream
Wow bacich! You're living my dream. I fell into this forum scrounging around the Intertubes looking for a teaching job in New Mexico. I had been to the Zuni Pueblo site a year ago, then got a job helping edit a small newspaper. That didn't work out as they promised so I bailed thinking I'd get a teaching job this summer here in Maine.
Sadly, the economy in this state is as bad as it's ever been and I have nearly a dozen years' teaching experience. I'm at that cusp of being a master teacher and costing a bit too much.
Your situation sounds wonderful. I'm absolutely jealous. I'm hoping the best for you, your dogs and your husband.
It looks like the Pueblo Schools need physical education teachers and I'm certified in both English and P.E., though my undergrad degree is in dance. [Long story : ^ )]
You're on the road right now. I hope you get a chance to check in before too long. I'll be sending my resume soon.

Yes, they need PE teachers. They went through a couple last school year, but it was mostly handled by the Healthy Lifestyle employees. They are just there for nutrition and health programs for schools. If they get one person for the PE position, they will probably switch elementary schools like Bacich.

Thanks for the inside scoop, bigduly.
My current home state Maine is like NM in that lots of teachers operate between two schools or more, especially at the elementary level. Since I've been teaching h.s. I've been in one place--though two far distant buildings. I couldn't convince my English students to read and write in the dance studio nor would my dance students dance in my classroom. Heh. Kids today.
