hello!!! we are moving to the rio rancho area VERY soon and we are SO excited!!! we are moing from the phoenix, az area and i am curious to know what the electic bills are like there in nm!!! especially in the SUMMER!!! in phx, it get HOT, so we always had HIGH electic bills!!!
we will be buying a NEW 1600-2000 sq ft home in rio rancho, i am a stay-at-home-mom, so we are home during the day and we typically keep the thermostat at around 80 (on the 110+ days, i put it at 78). in the winter, we keep it at about 68.
can anyone tell me whati can expect my electric bills to be once we move?!?!?
When I moved here to northern NM, I called the gas and electric companies to get an estimate of the costs for previous tenants. They were very helpful.
My bills for both utilities seem high, but I never paid for electricity (for heat) before and can't compare it to elsewhere.

Is PNM the providing for both. I am so surprised. Yes a monopoly for sure. Here in Taos they only provide gas. Many of course also have propane and woodburning stoves or fireplaces (I wish my worked better) - especially tonight, I am freezing

My house is 2200 square feet and I have regular AC and gas heat -- not a swamp cooler.
I'd say the bill averages a little over a $100/month for both combined -- in the summer my electric is higher for AC and in the winter my gas is higher.
I just paid my last bill and it was $178 ... but that's because we have had this really really cold weather but I still think that is a great price. In other places I've lived I've had $300/400 a month bills in the peak of the summer or the winter.
LOL -- i'm moving out of Houston ASAP and i dream of the day i can again pay $100 electric bill! Living in Los ANgeles county all my life, i NEVER paid more than $90 for an electric bill. Here in Houston, i've never paid less than $220 and in the summer it runs just under $500 a month
here are the costs for electricity service, direct from the PNM site:
APPROVED/EFFECTIVE FOR SERVICE ON SEPTEMBER 1, 2005 RESIDENTIAL SERVICE PAGE 2 OF 3 Advice Notice No. 318 (B)
ENERGY CHARGE:
First 200 kWh per Month 6.7607¢/kWh x
All Additional kWh per Month 7.8844¢/kWh
Our home is about 2200 sq. ft. on 2 acres with an electric powered irrigation pump for the well. We have PNM for gas and electric. Bills vary from $68/month in summer to $150 in winter. Newer homes should be pretty well insulated and if you use your ceiling fans to move the air, you can stay pretty comfortable without feeding the PNM machine.
First off ... are you going to have refrigerated air or swamp cooler? If you have the option, go with refrigerated. (opening another can of worms there i know)
Anyway, we had a 2200 sq ft house in Albuquerque with a swamp cooler and gas heat and my bills ran from $80 to $150 a month. The "high" bills being during the winter time and that was only for about a month or two. I kept it in the low 70s during the summer time. I think there's nothing worse than a house that you can just about cut the air with a knife because it's so hot and stiffling.
I miss the low energy and gas bills of New Mexico. I nearly died when our elec/gas bill for our new house in DC was $450 and that was keeping the thermostat in the low 60's during the winter!
