Default Green Chile status report anyone?

It is getting very near my favorite time of year. Our annual trip to stock up on green chile. I am down to my last few bags and using it sparingly.

What is the latest news on the chile crop? We usually buy Hatch but I heard about a new type called Jim something developed by the University. These are suppose to be bigger and meatier than the Hatch.

Can't wait to return to NM, even if it is just for a few days, and smell that odor of roasting Chiles.

Ah, that great smell of chiles roasting...

We got all our chile last year from the Clovis Farmer's Market, and it was grown in Portales. Previously, we had to get chile shipped to us when we lived back in New Hampshire, and we only tried chile from Hatch. I have to say that the Portales chile compared very favorably to the Hatch chile.

Can't wait. Yum.

I didn't even know they grew chiles in Portales. My brother is a Deputy Sheriff there and knows that area like the back of his hand. He has never said a word about chiles. Just peanuts!!! I will have to talk to him about it.

What days do they have the Farmers Market? I will have to check it out for sure.

Hatch is not a variety of chile, just a location. They grow Big Jims in the Hatch area, as well as other varieties.

The Clovis Farmer's Market is located at 4th and Pile and takes place on Saturdays at 8AM and Tuesdays at 5PM. They stay open until everything is sold. Last Saturday they had over 350 people attending early; by the time we got there at 9:30 almost everything was gone. We still got some lovely squash varieties. They roast on site during the chile harvest. (The photos were taken at the Clovis Market last summer).

The Portales Farmer's Market is located at the corner of W. 1st St. and S. Ave B, and is open Mondays and Thursdays, 4 p.m. in-season. Haven't been there yet.

Big Jims aren't a new variety. The newest, and IMO, the best new variety is Joe Parkers. They are big and meaty like a big jim (good for rellenos) but they have a little heat to 'em. Not too much but enough to remind you you're eating a chile and not a green pepper. Sandias are still the best variety to cook with I think, wonderful flavor and some real heat.

Mmmmmmm, I can't wait.

Local grocery store said they will start roasting in a couple of weeks! They do it in their parking lot, starting at 6AM. I live a block away and the area smells like roasted chilies for a month, fantastic!

Default Roswell Chili

I like to go to the Dobson and Graves farms south of Roswell just take Atkinson along the Railroad track all the way to the Farms and they Roast chili and sell vegetables in both of these farms. I think i paid 18 dollars each for 3 sacks of Roasted chili and i ended up running out a couple of Months ago. If you like Red chili year round the Red Powder Chile from Chimayo has a Great Flavor except its not hot enough. They sell it at most Stores even Wal Mart. I like to eat all my meals with any kind of chili and Rueing is an Art with red chili powder. pintada kid at webtv.net

Thanks for the information. I will be able to make it to the farmers market as we will be there on Sat.

I guess it was the Jim Parker type of chiles that I read about. I am going to give them a try this year. I use the red chile from Chimyo. We love it!!

I usually get the chiles roasted there in Clovis. This year I have 5 people from our area that I have to take bags back to them. Once they tasted them they loved them as much as we do.

Default Lets Not Forget About Chile

Dont forget the Garlic. Nothing smells better then the Fragrance of Chili Roasting and when its Freshly Roasted put it between a Freshly made Tortilla with butter and Add Garlic. Garlic is very important for Red or Green Chile and it keeps you from getting a Stomach ache. Too much Freshly Roasted Green Chile and you get a Stomach ache or it will seem like your Stomachs on fire. pintada kid at webtv.net
