It depends on the area in NM. Albuquerque and Santa Fe (and maybe Las Cruces too) are pretty diverse as far as ethnicity, religion, political views, and popular culture.
In the smaller towns you will find that they lean towards one thing or another, they may be mostly one race/ethnicity, religion, or hold the same political views, with a few people thrown in that don't match the main demographic.

Crime in the cities can be pretty bad in areas. In Albuquerque for example you will hear about crime all the time, but on the flip side most people you know are not victimized personally. It can just feel less safe when you hear about violent crime every day on the news. However if you are already coming from a high crime city, it probably will seem the same or safer.

NM seems to be still having problems selling homes, but perhaps this is changing? I'm not sure as I haven't looked much lately. The cost of homes in Santa Fe and Albuquerque to me (not a professional real esate agent or similar) seem higher than they should be, but they are still building subdivisions like crazy, so I guess some people think the prices are just fine.
In the smaller communities housing cost is much less, and some of these areas are within decent commute distance to in city jobs.

New Mexico is somewhat diverse, every town in NM has a good sized hispanic population, western NM has more Native Americans and Eastern NM has more African Americans. Clovis has the highest percentage in NM of blacks at 7%. Many people are mixed race here usually half Spanish/Mexican and White, its actually so common that it should be its own race. Add in some Asians and some Middle Eastern folks and everyone here gets along just fine.
Crime- NM is ranked as the 2nd or 3rd most dangerous state in the country, some people blame it on ABQ but ABQ is not all that dangerous and dosent carry the whole state and in reality its the small towns all across NM that help it rank that high.
Housing Sales-I was just reading in yesterdays paper that foreclosures are up but still below the national average.

NM is not very dangerous despite the high rankings.... You get some cars stolen in Las Cruces, some fights in Gallup and a murder in Raton and the crime rate soars because of the low population. Take those ratios with a grain of salt. There are more people in Phoenix/Dallas/Most big MSA's then all of NM.

The Truth About Crime in N.M.
I agree with Ibarrio that N.M. is unfairly Ranked in the Crime Statistics. Also i disagree about small towns being the cause of lots of crimes the truth is small towns know each other very well and when somebody commits a crime the people know before the Police do the next day. I dont have to Worry about anybody stealing my house because my Nosy neighbors keep an eye on it for me 24 7. >>>> I remember being in L.A. back in 1970 and the kids were selling drugs on the street most everyone was glassy eyed people asking for money on the Streets and fighting. I was amazed how much crime was going on during daylight hours within just about a 15 minute walk from my motel in the middle of the Day. That was in 1970 i wonder how it is today. To this Day i have never seen that in N.M. and ive driven over 2 million miles exploring the Whole state the last 40 years. We are being unfairly Judged in the Statistics but thats OK if it keeps our State from being overun by people. pintada kid at webtv.net

Kind of surprising about the crime -- it does seem high when compared to states like Philadelphia and Ohio and New Jersey where you usually think of high crime rates.
Is the crime high from property crime and gang type of crime, or domestic? It can make a difference in how safe someone feels personally in how much crime is stranger crime, where the victim doesn't know the attacker and how much is domestic and between gangs where neither side is innocent.

I think that most of the larger states all have afluent areas with money while there really isnt anywhere in NM like that except for Los Alamos, and most of the larger states have alot more town to factor into the equation.
I would say its mostly due to domestic, gang related(almost every town in NM has gangs) and property crime is very very common. Crime is not random most of the time anywhere in the country and the stats usually prove that, except for property crimes. Most towns in NM have low populations so 3 or 4 murders in a population of 25,000 dont look too good, but mostly its all in who you are associated with,if you party, and what your intrests are, I've got into some trouble before so I know how it is in small towns.
