If you choose to reside in Gallup, which is probably the best locale if you wanna travel daily to Crownpoint, there are two good routes [that ARE paved by the way] to get to Crownpoint. Route #1: Travel north on HWY 491 > East on BIA Rd 9 > Crownpoint! Route #2: Travel east on I-40 to Thoreau > North on State Rd. 371 > Crownpoint!!

And no Crownpoint isn't ALL dirt roads. They have the basics: a gas station, general store, and a grocery store. Most if not the entire town is paved. It's on the outer limits that a lot of roads are dirt roads.

Also there are several private schools in Gallup and the surrounding areas. Lol, how I know all this is because I live in Gallup and I'm Navajo, and I have a lot of family in and around Crownpoint. =)

Default considering move to crown point also

In October, we will be visiting the IHS site at Crownpoint for my husband's job interview there. I have not yet visited New Mexico and I am interested in housing, schools, stores, etc. ANY info we can get on the area would be greatly appreciated!

Thoreau is 30 miles from Gallup, 30 miles from Grants AND 30 miles from Crownpoint. The Driving Distance from Gallup to Crownpoint can be just the same as the commute from Grants to Crown point. There is no difference in Distance. From Either Direction you can take one of the side roads, but you still have an almost identical 1 hour guaranteed on a good day commute. However all winter you are looking at longer commute due to the fact that the main road out of Crownpoint crosses the continental Divide and tends to get quite messy when it snows.

I have a friend who works at IHS in Crownpoint. If you drop me a private message and I can forward your message to my friend who can provide behind the scenes input about the ISH site.

Moving to Crownpoint from Maine in the next few weeks. Thanks for the tip about 4WD vehicles- now I have to find a dealership somewhere near there! I'm really looking forward to the experience.

I was considering a science teaching position at the Alamo Branch of the Navaho Northwest of Magdalena. They have a satillite view of thier "town center". There are more buildings on our Moonbase.

Smile I live in Crownpoint!!!!!

Hey there! okay...key points...

Crownpoint is one word Let's see.

Schools: Bureau of Indian Affairs k-8th (not for only native kids...biligaanas can go to school there too Then, there are the Gallup Mckinley County District schools. k-12th grades. For Private schools, there are the St. Boneventure schools in Thoreau, NM about 30 minutes South of Crownpoint.

Stores: One small trading post. 86 Octane. Right now $2.07 a gallon approx. Then, Mustang Gas station. 86 Octane. Usually 5 cents or so more than the trading post. There is one BASHAS Grocery store that holds the basic stuff to fill a simple kitchen.

Cafes/lunch places: nothing! pack your lunch

Gallup is an hour away. Traveling West bound on Route 9, there is a 20 mile stretch of road that is being repaved by idiots. Takes an additional 15 minutes to get through there. Traveling South, then West bound using the Freeway, via Thoreau, takes about an hour. Grants is 50 minutes away. If you google maps and go to the satillite pics you can see the road twists!
P.S. the route from Thoreau has a CANYON that gets really scary in snow and WIND. Trucks and 18 wheelers use that road a lot because they are constructing a new BIA school. The gravel pits are near Thoreau, so watch out for gravel rocks in your windshield!

A car would do just fine. 4X4 is a bit better during the bad weather times...

I always chat with the local IHS employees...the visiting Docs seem to like living in the IHS housing complex just fine. They get their groceries and exotic things on the weekends and pop into Bashas for a few needs. If your fine with having a simple life during the week, then living in Crownpoint would be just fine.

Bank/ATM: Banking will need to be handled in Grants or Gallup....BUT WellsFargo has an ATM machine in Bashas and it seems to be the only bank is pretty much in every town around here.

Commuting gets hard on the mind and body, and the winter weather is tough.....but, it's New Mexico...by afternoon all is back in business....

For weekends: Traveling into Farmington, NM is better than Gallup. They have a few things that Grants and Gallup don't have. ig: Target, Sams Club, bigger theaters, Sears (full), Lowes, etc..... Farmington is an hour and fifteen minutes North bound.

Hope that helps!

Will be working for IHS. What is the complex like? Hoping for a pool and a grocery store- the rest I can live without. Do you know anyone who lives in the complex who I can contact for details?
Thanks!
