Default We are possibly moving to Crown Point, near Gallop and Grant. Are any Albq. suburbs close to commute?

Could you commute from Grant or Gallop to Crown Point? Are there any private schools or good preschools in any of these areas? Would a suburb of Albq. be too far to commute? Thanks for any info! My husband is doing a one to two year rotation at the reservation as a dentist.

We live in Albuquerque and my wife worked as a psychologist in Grants for many years. I asked her about your question because she's more knowledgeable about that area. The commute from Gallup/Grants to Crown Point would be at least 45 minutes, but could be a lot longer depending on where in Crown Point you're trying to get to. Many times you'd be on dirt roads, so your vehicle needs to be rugged. It doesn't have to be a full size 4x4, but don't expect to use a Boxster. There are no private schools and she couldn't recommend a preschool in the area. She's aware because we have two daughters, 10mo and 2 yrs ourselves. It would not be realistic to commute from Albuquerque. My wife had to drive that stretch of I-40 quite often, so let's just say by the end she was making good time. Just to get to Grants it still took her an hour and a half. That stretch has a lot of big-rigs and there are sometimes some really nasty dust storms. I'm talking about barely seeing beyond the edge of your hood nasty.

I hate to be the bearer of bad news, but the point of this forum is to give you a heads up perspective from the local point of view, and I wouldn't want to skew that. My wife actually knows a someone who's husband is currently doing a rotation up there and she's expecting. We're going to check with them to make sure they're comfortable with being contacted, but feel free to DM me if you're interested in hearing about their experience.

Also, just so you're looking for the right information, the towns you're referring to are Gallup and Grants

Crownpoint is pretty much the middle of nowhere to be honest. It's one of those places in which you have to embrace the landscape and the weather because that's the only thing there. You'll be totally dependent on yourselves to provide distractions and entertainment while there.

I would start with a New Mexico road map and then get a Benchmark Maps atlas. The latter has more information than you can memorize. Judging from these maps Crownpoint is just about as far away from any other city in NM as you can get.

I had a little one on the res and you pretty much have to do home school type activities,
You might find another parent to do a small play group with. You have to embrace the idea of being independent and focuisng on your family. It can be a very bonding relaxing year if you have good attitude.

I totally agree. It is very desolate. It is probably an hour drive from either Gallup or Grants.

Solitude and desolation are not the same thing.

Solitude and Desolation are two villages that you pass on your way to Crown Point. Once you reach CP you are beyond Solitude and Desolation.

Also, in the winter, they get storms out there that could be described as "The Mother of" storms.

Might as well suck it up and live like the rest of the people at Gallup or even at Crown Point. Commuting from Grants or ABQ is not rational.
