I feel that animal vaccinations are cheap compared to the costs one might incur without them.
I know of people who lost horses to encephalitis (sp?) because they couldn't be bothered to spend the $15 for the shot. Instead they ended up with thousands in vet bills and a dead animal. You know what they say about an ounce of prevention......

Not cheap but we use Sentinel for our dog(s) - its a heartworm & flea preventative. We didn't have a huge problem with heartworms in the NW but we traveled with them a lot & it was recommended we put them on it.
I've found a good online source for pet meds once you get a prescription. it was a bit cheaper (even with postage) than our vet back in Seattle and also WAY more convenient. If you want the link (not sure I can post it here) send me a DM. It's not the 1800petmeds place...
What about parvo & kennel cough vaccine - needed here? I had a pup die of parvo when I was a kid and I'd to have a pet go thru that again. Horrible.

Both parvo and kennel cough vaccinations are a must if there is any possibility that you might board your pups, send them to doggy-daycare or otherwise expose them to lots of other dogs.

The diseases that fleas and ticks can carry are nothing to be toyed with... If your pets are like mine, and are more like kids, then I would follow your vet's recommendations. I would rather shell out the money and get them vaccinated for those dangerous diseases such as parvo, lukemia (in cats), Lyme disease, and the plague than have them endure the struggle of fighting them... Just think of it this way, the treatments of these diseases can sometimes cost hundreds if not thousands of dollars... not to mention the distress of watching your pet endure the pain from these diseases. As for the three year vaccines, such as the rabies shot, you need to follow your vet's recommendations, and get the vaccinated on time. You need to get them a booster once a year for three years before their immune systems pick up... Then you can follow the once every three year vaccination... if you miss a booster, you have to start over. And Remember that the Rabies vaccination is not a choice in New Mexico... it is the law.

Seems like the people that board dogs would ask for papers on the shots they have had.

Other livestock
Great thread, and thanks for starting. How about vaccinations for other critters-pecifically, horses? Any West Nile or other nasties there? Do you have many ticks, especially those stupid deer ticks? Thanks!

Hog Farmer:
It depends on what area of new mexico you are referring to. I worked at a vet clinic in NE NM for a short stint and we had a handful of westnile cases along with one lyme disease case... I would call an area vet, they would definately know what diseases are caused by what parasites in your area.... Goodluck!

40 degrees last night-finally no mosquitos!
Thanks. We're looking to set up camp in the Ruidoso/Alto area. Seems like some normal flies but very few blood suckers otherwise, which would be a welcomed change! And yes, after seeing strangles and other junk go through some show barns, completely agree spending a few bucks on preventative care!

For those of you with animals, do you do this for your pets? I haven't seen any signs of fleas in NM so I'm not sure if I'm giving them something they don't really need.
I don't want to ask a vet because vets are like medical doctors and like to write prescriptions for unnecessary items.
Heartworm meds might be a waste too but tell me what you do or do not give your pets.
Someone mentioned this to me from another area and wondered the same thing so I'm posting to get opinions.

We always got the usual shots when needed and yes, had them on heartworm prevention, but never flea medication of any kind: 7 years, never a single flea. Here in AR we do have to use flea and tick prevention, it is very expensive...

only problem with this: many, if not most vets will not give you a perscription. At least this has been our experience, both in NM and here is AR.
