Default Favorite western colleges? I need to make a decision...

Howdy Everyone!

I am spending hours upon hours, looking up Universities (also, a solid Major) to transfer to. I would like some help! I live in San Diego, but it doesn't look like that has a lot of options for me, as far as what I would like to get into. I would like others opinions, experiences, and pics, if you have them!

Yes, I have spoken with various career counselors, coaches, etc. Ultimately, there is really nowhere near here to study, so I have accepted that I will have to leave for a while, to pursue my dream. I have been suggested places like Humboldt State, Northern Arizona University, etc. These are places of interest to me, I just want to know what all is out there.

I am going to work with wildlife/animals also while working with trees/outdoors. I am really into hiking, mountains, pines, rivers and rocks. Places I love are Sedona/Flagstaff Az, No. Cal, Colorado, New Mexico, Oregon, and Wa. state.
I am open to other places in the West. I prefer a place that has perhaps a decent/easy way to get in and out of town easily, because my husband and family will be here the two years I am gone.

Majors I am interested in are anything to do with outdoors. Forestry, Environmental Ed., Wildlife Bio, Outdoor Rec., etc...

Thank you for your help, please let me know if you have any ideas!

-Annie

Hi,

I can't help you much except to suggest that this thread should be moved from the Santa Fe sub-forum to the larger New Mexico forum. Santa Fe is not deep in four-year colleges. You will have more choices looking state-wide, and just about every city in New Mexico offers you easy access to hiking and the outdoors.

Good luck.

I would say go to Colorado State. A great school, a great city, and wilderness and outdoor recreation abound right outside your doorstep. Go to Fort Collins!

Default My Advice On Colleges

Since over half of N.M. is Mountains and Forests i would say just about anywhere in N.M. would be ideal. Ive been in San Diego and so i kind of know the Climate there and i would think the southern part of N.M. has those nice temps with dry climate. Silver City 6000 feet elevation has a College ive only been to their Library years ago but its a Quiet little City with nice people or had nice people in that area when i was there over 20 years ago for a few months. I dont like the Air There and its a long way from Alb. and S.F..>>>> My Preference would be the East Mountain Area near Albuquerque and Santa Fe and theres plenty of Mountains everywhere and lots of Wonderful people and you can explore N.M. from the Center within a Day. Our Snow starts the end of October and its not unusual to get Snow till the End of May here in the Center of N.M. the Northern part gets Colder with more Snow they stay in the 20s till the end of June. We can get to 20 and 25 below in the center of N.M. but its Rare. P.S. it is getting Dangerous to Hike in the Mountains with all the Injured and Hungry Wild Animals out there i hope you know how to use a Weapon and practice with it. If i can be of Assistance to giving you info on N.M. feel free to ask and that goes for anyone whom i can help find their place in N.M. My Advice to people is Rent to Own and get to know the Area it might not be the Bed of Roses the Realtors try to tell you it is. It Could be anything, Flooding, Dust, Wild Animal Dangers, Forest Fire Dangers, Pollution Crime, water problems etc. pintada kid at webtv.net

You are limited in where you might live by the programs that interest you. If you are looking at NM, the Ag college is in Las Cruces, and would have the most options based on your interests. Otherwise, the other colleges will have some environmental programs that may interest you. I think you need to get more specific on what kind of studies you want to pursue; this will narrow down your choices, and make your decision easier.

I suggest starting with UNM in Albuquerque. Check out their on line catalog then write some letters.

BTW - I worked on a similar program nearly forty years ago and I can practically guarantee that you will never get rich or even break even on the wages offered for that sort of work. The studies are fascinating but the pay is terrible.

Both the university of NM and NM state are good schools, but so are the others you mentioned. Of course No AZ in Flagstaff is an awesome area. Abq will give you good access for traveling. Humbult State isn't very convenient as there is only a very small airport and the area is pretty far from everything. Have you thought about Colo State University? My granddaughter graduated from there a few years ago and my cousin (many years ago) got his bach and masters in forrestry from there. Just some ideas.

Remember the University of NM is a major city University, like San Diego State, but not nearly as large. NMstate in Las Cruses will probably offer you a better education in the field you are persuing. It is also close to El Paso, so flying in and out would be very easy...Check it and Colo State as well as Northern AZ, would be my suggestion.

Yeah, if you want to bake your skull all summer long in 100 plus heat. You might study the effects of extreme heat on stink bugs or something as exciting as that.
