Cloudcroft/Mayhill Question (Holloman AFB: for sale, HOA, mobile home)

On a recent weekend trip, a realtor showed me some properites in a small development about halfway between Cloudcroft and Mayhill called "Cloud Country Estates." Looked like a real nice area with a lot of well built cabins/log homes.

Are any of you familiar with this area?

Any opinions you'd care to express?

I love that place. If I was retired, I seriously look into buying there for a summer home. A realtor took us on a tour there almost 4 years ago, and at the time, we considered the commute (to Holloman AFB at the time) to be a little too long. But I think it's a wonderful community.

I was impressed with the wildlife in the area, too. We saw a flock of wild turkeys. There were a bunch of whitetail deer too, which I thought was unusual. I was under the impression that all the deer in NM were mulies.

It's a very nice area. The trout pond is a big plus. And the ducks that swim around on it seem to be almost tame.

The wife and I, Love looking at it as we go by. But to pricey for us. Also from what we can see, it is too close to the highway for us. Not sure how far it goes back thought.

Most of the homes are about a mile from Hwy 82, back in the pines and not easily seen from the road. It's a very nice setting. A little isolated, but scenic and well-planned.

What level of pricey is it? Are the homes trophy cabins or more modest?

This is correct. I thought it was far enough removed from Hwy 82 to be considered very desirable.

I think there's quite a range in prices. Some cabins are probably no more than about 1100-1200 sq ft while others are large homes probably over 2500 sq ft. All have nice large lots, though. I believe each lot is 1/2 acre. And no mobile homes; strictly site built construction.

My husband and I just looked at that development. They have a website: Untitled Page. There are several houses for sale, but right now they seem to be mostly in the upperbracket. Well, we are looking at $180,000 and below, so there might be some in the $200,000s right now...not sure. The whole area has a very nice, searchable MLS system.

If you go to the website, you see that they have a pool and snowplowing, but you have to pay a HOA fee.

What we liked about that development is that it seems to have a very strong, reliable water system. The whole Cloudcroft, as we understand, is very dry. We spoke quickly this summer with a resident in the Robin Hood development, and they seemed to have some water issues this past Spring (lack-of-water issues).
