Default Moving to Hobbs from...Miami!

Hi everyone,

I finally got my career job and moving to New Mexico very soon. I will be in Santa Fe for a few months and then going to Hobbs for the rest of my career. Anyone have recommendations of an apartment in Hobbs that are safe? I can not for the life of me find anything online Also, I am guessing there is a very low or none jewish population there? The closest synagogue is kind of far.

Also, what is the main internet service provider? I use Comcast now, but not sure if it is in Hobbs.

Thanks!

Wow. Miami to Hobbs is going to be a real culture shock. I don't think you could have picked a more different town from Miami.

I personally think anybody who makes a career decision without visiting the town they're going to (or at least a similar town) is doing themselves a real disservice. We often hear of people burned out on their decision a few months into it.

Housing availability in Hobbs is very poor. Between the huge boom in a couple of industries and a stodgy government, more people want accommodations than can get them. Perhaps you might consider an RV until you find something more permanent.

I believe CableOne is the cable provider down that way. Same as Comcast as far as I've seen.

The reality in southeast NM is that you drive, drive, drive. The car is not a status symbol; it's a necessity, and what you need is sometimes hours worth of driving from where you are.

Log in and it will give you at least 10 apartment complexes in Hobbs. My son lives at the Rex Arms. But he is the frugal type and its an older complex which doesn't bother him. Now the Jewish places of worship, this is a hard one because of distance and there is no synagogues or temples in Hobbs.

(1) Congregation B'Nai Israel ph. (505) 625-9883 Roswell, NM

(2) Temple Mount Sinai ph. (915) 532-5959 El Paso, Texas (Reform)

(3) Congregation Shaareth Israel ph (806) 794-7517 Lubbock, Texas

Were from Naples, Fl. and my youngest son has lived in Hobbs a year October 23rd..Were Jewish as well. Temple Mount Sinai really has a history. Through the Jewish settlement of El Paso it dates to a period of time proceeding the Civil War. This one appeals to him because of the history and it is more of a Sephardic Jewish congregation. Oh well Florida.... a fellow who works where my son does comes from Ft. Lauderdale Fl. I wish you the most sincere best of luck in Hobbs NM.

Well, I visited Santa Fe and it is a great place. Never been to Hobbs, but it is where the job goes and the job is very good too

RV is not for us, yucky!

Yeah, looks like synagogue is around 1 hr away...oh well! Guess we wont be going that often. I can also live in a town close by, maybe Lovington? I don't know, I guess I will do more research when I get closer to moving to Hobbs; first step is Santa Fe.

My Hobbs son, remembers a little bit about living in Harlingen Texas. We attended Temple Shalom and had Shabbat services about once a month. There was a rabbinical student that would fly down from Hebrew Union/Cincinnati Ohio would lead our service. I'm sure lots have changed this was 1985. My son remembers the members from South Padre Island would attend. We were so happy to see them because it was one heck of a car ride. Like they would tell us the people on South Padre Island are so nice and friendly. My son has said repetadly about the people in Hobbs how friendly they are, and maybe I can't get to Shabbat as often as I'd like but I know of 4 places I can attend.

Glad to see someone post positive about Hobbs .....Jara . I hope the new 2 billion dollar Nuclear Facility in Eunice is coming along as that will be great economically for that region.

Well, I made it to Santa Fe last week after driving 30 hours and have a month-month lease at a place here. I will be moving to Hobbs on Dec 26th.

I am thinking the only nice apartments are:

Summerwind Terrace
Windscape (i think thats how its spelt)
Regal Manor

Any others I should look into? Windscape is the most expensive :-\

I am moving with another person since we are getting transferred there.

Oh Jara, did you know they are almost done making a crime lab in Hobbs?

I have to agree. This is a risk. The culture shock. But some people are able to handle it very well.
