Caydriver......is Camp Blanding just behind Ft. Stanton still used as a work camp for early release inmates and remembered when they first started building Ruidoso's airport back then out next to it. I also remember when Ft. Stanton used to be the home for retarded children as that's where the state of New Mexico housed and schooled them back in the 80's/90's.

Ft. Stanton has been closed to special needs patients for a number of years. The patients that were housed there are now in small group homes. Camp Sierra Blanca is closing in June. It may now become a museum and historical site. The cemetery is now a state veterans ground. Prices in the store are in line with Ruidoso stores and Walmart. They work very hard at being competitive. Smokey Bear is always the same. Just good solid home cooking. By the way there is also a meat market in Lincoln called Laughing Sheep Farm that has excellent meat. They have a web site, also a little cafe in the summer.

I heard a rumor that it might also be turned into a detention center for violent juveniles. Is there any truth to that?

Try to answer the questions. No violent young offenders at Ft Stanton. The kids that were housed there were low risk and second chance type kids. They would participate in activities, parades etc. in Capitan and Ruidoso. They also helped when we had the floods this summer in Ruidoso. Overall nice kids that needed another route to take. Shopping, of course Ruidoso but Lincoln has small shops, as does Capitan, Hondo (art) and San Patricio. It has changed over the past few years for the good. Capitan has five restaurants, and also Tinnies in Hondo. Laughing Sheep Farms has chemical free lamb, beef, pork etc.

Pintada. Roswell is 70 miles with a better 4 lane road thru Hondo valley and Ruidoso is 25 miles. It is a great area to visit or live. School systems are also ranked among the best in NM.

I knew a famous sculptor, Luis Jimenez, who lived in Hondo. He unfortunately died in a tragic accident in his studio there a few years ago. There isn't much to Hondo, or at least not last time I was there. It's located at the 380-70 split. Lincoln is a fascinating little tourist-oriented place about 15 or 20 miles up 380.
