Albuquerque is a good choice if you like cities. Los Lunas is also another great choice thats about 20-40 minutes from Albuquerque. Rio Rancho is a suburb of Albuquerque & is also a really good choice. I hope this info helps!

Default Around ABQ

You said you want to stay in the Albuquerque area, I'd pick:
1. Cedar Crest-Tijeras (if you like mountains)
2. Paradise Hills
3. Los Ranchos De Albuquerque
4. Near the tram (which is on the mountain)
5. Rio Rancho
6. Edgewood-Moriarty
7. Los Lunas (people living in Los Lunas say it is nice, I don't know that area very well but believe in what they say)

I personally don't like the Albuquerque area. The crime, urban sprawl, and traffic is too bad for me. If I had to move back to New Mexico, I'd probably pick Las Cruces, Santa Fe, or Silver City. Santa Fe is really expensive though, and Albuquerque's problems are encroaching upon it.

According to one source, the land in Silver City is very contaminated. Do you know why?

Burque if you like the City. Belen just south of Burque, or Bernalillo just north if you want less of a city feel. Fanta Se if you can afford it, and want to live in a little historical, tourist town. Tijeras and Cedar Crest in the mountains are nice, and they are close to Burque.

I'm sure one can find contaminated land around Silver City, as the mining industry has been there for a very long time and mines are notorious polluters, especially in the past when there was no regulation or oversight.
That being said, the water in the town system is fine, if that's your concern. It's a pretty broad statement to say The land in Silver City is very contaminated... what is the source of your info?
